Historia
I was, in life, to be a gambler, a risk-taker, a swashbuckler, a knight. I accepted, then and there, my place in the world. I was a fighter of windmills. I was a chaser of whales. I was Not Sidney Poitier. Not Sidney Poitier is an amiable young man in an absurd country. The sudden death of his mother orphans him at age eleven, leaving him with an unfortunate name, an uncanny resemblance to the famous actor, and, perhaps more fortunate, a staggering number of shares in the Turner Broadcasting Corporation.

So clever and funny
Revisado: 05-09-24
Laugh-out-loud funny. Loved the depiction of Ted Turner. Loved the insertion of the author as a character. Percival Everett is brilliant. Can’t wait to read more of his work.

Just loved this!
Revisado: 06-01-23
This was my first PG Wodehouse book, and I absolutely loved it. The narrator is fantastic. I am now eager to listen to Wodehouse’s other books.

Historia
In a comprehensive and beautifully crafted first person narrative, David Copperfield recalls key stages, memories, and incidents of his life from infancy to maturity. Scenes, adventures, and characters are summoned to the narrator's remembrance so vividly that they are rendered with the vitality of the present moment.

A long read!
Revisado: 02-16-23
I did enjoy this book and the audible performances, but my goodness, it was very long indeed. I wanted to read it because Barbara kingsolver’s has a new book out that was inspired by David Copperfield. So now that I have finish this book, I am on to “Demon Copperhead,”

Historia
It’s 1927, and 18-year-old Mary Engle is hired to work as a secretary at a remote but scenic institution for mentally disabled women called the Nettleton State Village for Feebleminded Women of Childbearing Age. Soon after she’s hired, Mary learns that a girl from her childhood orphanage is one of the inmates. Mary remembers Lillian as a beautiful free spirit with a sometimes-tempestuous side. Could she be mentally disabled? When Lillian begs Mary to help her escape, Mary is faced with a terrible choice.

Interesting subject, but poor execution
Revisado: 08-16-22
I was very disappointed with this book. I had learned about it in the New York Times Book Review podcast, so I expected it to be really good. The plot wasn’t bad, a little unbelievable at times, but the writing was a little purple. And, I’m sorry to say, because Laura Benanti is a very good actress, the narration was terrible. I think she was given poor direction. It was all too breathless and wide-eyed, but again, that was partly the result of the writing.
I wouldn’t recommend.

Historia
Meet the Cooke family: Mother and Dad, brother Lowell, sister Fern, and Rosemary, who begins her story in the middle. She has her reasons. “I was raised with a chimpanzee”, she explains. “I tell you Fern was a chimp and already you aren’t thinking of her as my sister. But until Fern’s expulsion...she was my twin, my funhouse mirror, my whirlwind other half and I loved her as a sister”. As a child, Rosemary never stopped talking. Then, something happened, and Rosemary wrapped herself in silence.

Love this book!
Revisado: 03-29-15
I read this book on the recommendation of a friend who wouldn't tell me what it was about--and I recommend you avoid reading too much or you'll learn the story line, which the author wants to discover as you read.
After reading the paper version, I listened to the Audible version, to refresh my memory for a book club discussion.
The audio version is fabulous. Outstanding narration, just perfect. The story is funny and sad, complicated and simple. Family dynamics, the challenges of memory, the ethics of scientific research...it's all here, and told in a voice that is so real and believable. Rosemary is my favorite fictional character in quite a long while.
A "must read," in my opinion.

Historia
Like it or not, Hillary Clinton is almost assuredly going to run for president in 2008. It doesn't matter that her negative poll numbers are high or that her past 15 years in the public eye have been anything but smooth. Since she was a little girl she has dreamed about becoming the first female president, and now that dream is well within reach.

Don't waste your time. Brought to you by the same folks that will stoop to anything to derail any Democrat who doesn't agree 100% with our current President. If you think the DaVinci Code is non-fiction, you'll believe this is a biography!

Awful
Revisado: 03-25-05
I have liked his books in the past, but this one doesn't make any sense. Other than traveling it doesn't seem that Alex Cross does any investigating until after the deed is done, 3/4 through the book.
