Great book, but......
Revisado: 12-30-24
This is a very interesting book, but it's one of the few audible listens that's probably better read. It just got very convoluted, and long. I wish I had gotten it in print form.

It's official - I'll never be a "CoHo". I just don't think she's much of a writer. I understand that some readers like a fast paced book - but come on - this is laughable. Not for me.

I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out...and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late. But I reassure myself: The Winchesters don’t know who I really am. They don’t know what I’m capable of....

For the life of me, I don't get what is so appealing about this author. It reads like a Lifetime Original movie - starring Tori Spelling - so if you want something with substance, keep looking. This "fan fiction" genre is not for me.

Unless you really like to read about mentally disturbed characters, I'd skip this. It will probably be my last Lisa Jewell - this is "fan fiction" - a genre I have really gotten tired of. There are MUCH better books to listen to.

Historia
On Memorial Day in Jewel, Minnesota, the body of wealthy landowner Jimmy Quinn is found floating in the Alabaster River, dead from a shotgun blast. The investigation falls to Sheriff Brody Dern, a highly decorated war hero who still carries the physical and emotional scars from his military service. Even before Dern has the results of the autopsy, vicious rumors begin to circulate that the killer must be Noah Bluestone, a Native American WWII veteran who has recently returned to Jewel with a Japanese wife.

Landsakes! This book is a dangburn example of what is "young adult" reading - way too slow and ridiculous for an adult. Don't waste your money - unless you are about 15 years old!

Historia
The final novel from a great American storyteller. Donal Cameron is being raised by his grandmother, the cook at the legendary Double W ranch in Ivan Doig's beloved Two Medicine Country of the Montana Rockies, a landscape that gives full rein to an 11-year-old's imagination. But when Gram has to have surgery for "female trouble" in the summer of 1951, all she can think to do is to ship Donal off to her sister in faraway Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

Sometimes I need a break from suspense, mysteries, and the other complicated novels I tend to listen to. This book is just a wonderful story, and the narration is perfect, too. Highly recommend when you just want a nice, well written book to get lost in.

Julie Andrews goes to Poland
Revisado: 04-18-23
I usually love the narrators at Audible, but this was a total miss! The book is about Polish Jews, in a Polish concentration camp. So who is the narrator? A woman with a crisp British accent. Imagine Mary Poppins reading such a tale. Just wrong on so many levels. The story was a bit saccharine, believe it or not. Just skip this one.

Revisado: 10-31-22
I've listened to many Elin Hilderbrand books, but this is definitely my last! The plot is juvenile, and I really think she is "phoning it in". There are far, far better books to listen to than this drivel!

I made it to the end of this book - but more out of "duty" (I always try to finish what I start) than out of a love for the story. It's OK - good in some parts and slow in others. You could find a better listen.
