Historia
Peter Holstein writes his popular series of adventure novels under a pen name. With European politics boiling and his own neighbors suspicious of him, Peter debates whether it might be best to change his name for good. When Rosemary shows up at his door pretending to be a historian and offering to help him trace his family history, his question might be answered. But as the two work together and Rosemary sees his gracious reaction to his neighbors' scornful attacks, she wonders if her assignment is going down the wrong path.

Simply Outstanding g
Revisado: 01-08-25
I am on a Roseanna M. White binge, reading each of her series of books back to back to back. I love her stories of World War I and World War II, England, and the unsung women who worked behind the scenes. I am looking forward to the next several books in this particular series. As much as I love Roseanna M. White's books, I love the narrator, Liz Pearce. Ms. Pearce acts out the books with her voice so there's excitement and urgency in the way she reads. It was all I could do not to sit up and listen to the book all night long. I highly recommend this book.

Fantastic read
Revisado: 04-26-24
The narrator of this book was incredible. She really brought the story to life with her narration. Her ability to do different voices and to give each character their own voice was wonderful. I will look for more books that she has narrated for audible.
I was fascinated to learn the history of Ford. My extended family lived in Michigan near the Ford factory, but I had no idea of Ford's involvement in politics, World War II, and the social experiments that he conducted with his employees. This is one of those books that teaches you information that you never knew you needed to know. This book will go in my favorites folder to be listened to again and again.

A favorite author
Revisado: 12-02-23
As always, this book by Catherine Ryan Hyde was about damaged people who through their relationships with each other, find redemption and are healed. I have devoured her books over the years and recommended her to so many other reader friends. You won’t go wrong with this book except to say that that there are times when you simply can’t turn it off and you are late to bed or late to work or just late!

Historia
Though the Pony Express has enjoyed a lot of traction over the years, among the authors that have attempted to encapsulate it, none have ever ridden it themselves. While most scholars would look for answers inside a library, Will Grant looks for his between the ears of a horse. Inspired by the likes of Mark Twain, Sir Richard Burton, and Horace Greeley, all of whom traveled throughout the developing West, Will Grant returned to his roots: he would ride the trail himself with his two horses, Chicken Fry and Badger, from one end to the other.

What a Great Story
Revisado: 07-05-23
Will Grant is my neighbor. I met him during the pandemic when I walked my dog on our country road in our area just outside Santa Fe, NM. He told me that he was busy writing this book, and I have looked forward to reading it. Little did I know that it would be such a good read. Like Ivan Doig, Will has the ablilty to paint a picture of the area with words, describing what he saw so vividly that I could easily imagine what he was seeing-I felt like I was riding along with him. I loved his mix of history and geography with his story; the way he pulled in interesting facts like those about the Basque sheepherders and the grasses that have gone from the vast grasslands of the prairie. Kevin Stillwell was a great reader for this book. I have lived in the Southwest since 1975 and have packed into the mountain wilderness on horseback many times, so his story pulled at my heartstrings, reminding me of all those nights spent listening to horses on a picket line. Anyone who loves the history of the United States and the quiet spaces in the outdoors needs to read this book.

I wish I could give this more stars!
Revisado: 03-20-23
I have traveled to Italy many times, and Rome is one of my favorite cities. I had no idea this happened in Rome, and that’s why I love historical fiction. I kept wanting this story to hurry along so that I could find out what happened and at the same time, I wanted it to last forever. And the readers! They brought the characters to life. Cassandra Campbell and Eduardo Ballerini are amazing readers. If I could give this book 10 stars I would. If I could give the readers 10 stars, likewise I would.

My Oak Ridge Home
Revisado: 01-17-23
My family moved to Oak Ridge when I was four years old in 1951. My father, a pathologist in research, took a job at Y-12, the central laboratory in this book when the town was opening up to the world. He still had to show ID at the security gates to approach the lab, and once again to enter the lab itself, and I remember the how guards scrutinized his badge carefully all the while chatting away with this young scientist whom they knew well. By the time I went to elementary school, all of us at school had parents working at one of the three labs in town, but we never asked what our parents did because their work was often still top secret! My father specialized in radiation research with the Marshall Islands project and traveled to Japan and the regions surrounding it where fallout from the bombs affected the health of the populations--something I really didn't understand until I was much older.
I found the story of the beginnings of my hometown fascinating. The description of WWII secrecy and the urgency to end the war was gripping. Xe Sands style of narration was spot on, as it always is. I heartily recommend the book.

Historia
On his way to work, Colin Ryan finds the woman whom he has loved for 30 years - his best friend’s wife – lying motionless on a dangerous bend in the road, unconscious and near death from alcohol poisoning. Believing she’s tried to kill herself, Colin does what he’s done since the beginning of their turbulent friendship: he nurtures and comforts her, this time with an eye toward solving the mystery that’s left her half dead on the foggy roadside. In signature North style, at once lyrical and gripping, Season's End gathers a brilliant cast of characters - richly rendered and beautifully grounded - against the sumptuous backdrop of Washington State’s Puget Sound.

Revisado: 07-05-22
This is the second Will North book I have read and his writing is outstanding. The characters are drawn fully and completely, and you become pulled into their lives. Once again I found struggling to turn the story off and go to bed when I just wanted to keep on listening. I hope audible will record more of his books.

Great book with a fabulous narrator
Revisado: 12-17-21
Julia Whelan rocks! Every time I listen to one of the books that she narrates I find myself being drawn into her characters. She has the ability to make each character an individual, which is exactly what the author did when writing the book. This was a lovely story about family, relationships, and how difficult those two things are. And it ends well too. I put this at the top of my list of audiobooks!

Fascinating Read
Revisado: 02-21-15
My mother's ancestors had a plantation in Lexington, KY and owned slaves. My father's ancestors arrived on the Mayflower and became farmers in Massachusetts. I grew in in TN. This book gave me such insight into the dilemma faced by the people of the Country during the pre-Civil War era, and perhaps faced by my own family. I found it gripping. I can't wait to move on to the next two in the series.
