Historia
In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson selected his personal secretary, Captain Meriwether Lewis, to lead a voyage up the Missouri River, across the forbidding Rockies, and - by way of the Snake and the Columbia rivers - down to the Pacific Ocean. Lewis and his partner, Captain William Clark, endured incredible hardships and witnessed astounding sights. With great perseverance, they worked their way into an unexplored West. When they returned two years later, they had long since been given up for dead.

Do yourself a favor & read the original journals.
Revisado: 04-02-25
Having read the original journals twice, this is a sad case of expert research marred by an omniscient author. Not only is the author aware of each of these great mens' inner, unspoken thoughts and motivations, but also holds them wanting as good men; laying one effete, leftist trope after another on them. Criticizing their "sexist," "chauvinist," "racist" motivations throughout.
i think most people would much rather enjoy the original journals, sans modern- day woke-scolding.

Historia
It is 1870 and Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd travels through northern Texas, giving live readings to paying audiences hungry for news of the world. An elderly widower who has lived through three wars and fought in two of them, the captain enjoys his rootless, solitary existence. In Wichita Falls, he is offered a $50 gold piece to deliver a young orphan to her relatives in San Antonio. Four years earlier, a band of Kiowa raiders killed Johanna's parents and sister; sparing the little girl, they raised her as one of their own.

Good story, great reader.
Revisado: 09-20-24
A good, well written, but not terribly creative story is made great by Grover Gardner. His reading is always a treat.
The characters are believable and relatable, the dialog well done. I didn't want it to end.
I'm not sure why there's a podcast host interview at the end. It adds nothing. It's just not very like, you know, like useful, or anything.

This is the book the CIA does not want you to read. For the last 60 years, the CIA has maintained a formidable reputation in spite of its terrible record, never disclosing its blunders to the American public. It spun its own truth to the nation while reality lay buried in classified archives. Now, Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter Tim Weiner offers a stunning indictment of the CIA, a deeply flawed organization that has never deserved America's confidence.

Fascinating, detailed, and interesting, but ultimately compromised by politics
Revisado: 09-09-24
The political views of the author determined to a sizable extent, the material chosen for this informative book. It slithers through the tales a bit too much.
The reader is excellent.

Historia
The Meditations are a series of private reflections written in Greek by a Roman emperor immersed in the administration of an empire beset by wars on its frontiers and natural disasters in its interior. It is the work of a great man seeking philosophical and spiritual solace in the midst of human chaos and uncertainty. This beautiful piece of ancient literature has been the companion of many leaders over the centuries who turned to inner reflection in times of unrest. Its Stoic philosophy has been much admired and emulated.

Author's personal & political voice is too strong
Revisado: 02-08-23
Wanting an informative, factual biography on a man I know too little about I downloaded this book.
It's an interesting subject, yet it's a struggle to stay focused when the authors try -- as many journalists do -- to stuff personal opinions, feelings, etc into the telling.
Being a part of the bussing social experiments of the 70s, it was very hard listening to the snide, sanctimonious pontificating on the subject.
I wouldn't recommend this book to a friend.

A masterpiece cheapened by inadequate narration.
Revisado: 01-19-23
I've read this book twice It's too detailed for one or even two readings, and so I wanted it on audio to listen while driving, etc, whenever I want. It is a wonderful read.
However, I'm quite disappointed to have this bland, uninspired, professorial-sounding narrator lessen the masterpiece. Why she was chosen is simply beyond me. It wouldn't surprise me to learn she's a friend of the producer.

Historia
On New Year's Day in 1870, 10-year-old Adolph Korn was kidnapped by an Apache raiding party. Traded to Comanches, he thrived in the rough nomadic existence, quickly becoming one of the tribe's fiercest warriors. Forcibly returned to his parents after three years, Korn never adjusted to life in white society. He spent his last years living in a cave, all but forgotten by his family. That is, until Scott Zesch stumbled upon his great-great-great-uncle's grave. Determined to understand how such a "good boy" could have become Indianized so completely, Zesch traveled across the West.

Very good, but a 2nd listen brought deeper insight
Revisado: 01-13-23
Very informative book with an outstanding reading by Grover Gardner. A lot of tales, sources, anecdotes, and even humour.
Yet, it was on the second listen that I heard something more. That is the author relates well to the anti-Anglo zeal of some of the captives. It did dampen the book a bit for me.

One of the greatest social commentaries on NYC
Revisado: 12-20-22
One of the greatest social commentaries on late 20th century NYC to ever be published. Scathing, delightful, morbid and hilarious.
From the Upper East side WASPS to the cynical Bronx DA's office to Harlem huckster extraordinaires like Al Sharpton; Wolfe lays before you a cast of characters so truthfully told that it gets a NYC resident of 37 years' seal of approval.
(Don't watch the film. The story has been murdered)
