Melanie is a very special girl. Dr. Caldwell calls her "our little genius". Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh. Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children's cells. She tells her favorite teacher all the things she'll do when she grows up.

The majority of fantasy sci-fi books follow such prescribed plot lines that out comes and character roles can be guessed quite early on. This detracts from the quality of the read. Raising the superior brow at the "I knew it" moment seldom offers adequate consolation. Other fantasy books meander randomly with things just happening arbitrarily as if the story were someone else's dream. Such stories can be enjoyable especially if the characters are crisp and well defined. Jeff VanderMeer`s Area X comes to mind. The Girl With all the Gifts is strong on plot and character. It is dreamy without throwing the reader into dreamlike state of confusion. As the story unwinds you may find yourself saying "Yes, of course I should have figured that" but you most likely will not. Plan on being pleasantly surprised as this book stays one half step ahead of you from start to it`s just and epic end.

This is the best format I have come across for learning to converse in Thai. Pity Pimsleur does not offer a level 2.
