I really wanted to like this book, being a geologist. Alas, it’s not very good.

Disappointing
Revisado: 06-04-17
What disappointed you about Ash?
I like the idea: Cinderella with some gender twists. But this is clumsy writing -- it reads like a first novel. Promising, but not quite readable yet.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Currently in the middle of a Joe Abercrombie novel. Beautiful, masterful writing! Very dark, but worth wincing through because the writing is so good.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Yes, the ideas are fine: a slightly grimmer Cinderella with diverse gender and sexuality roles.

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

Why is this so popular?
Revisado: 02-03-16
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The narration was fine. And the story has such potential! But the world-building is weak and the protagonist is unlikable. This is mildly amusing fluff, but life is too short to waste on less-than-excellent novels.
Would you ever listen to anything by Diana Gabaldon again?
No, sorry, probably not.
What three words best describe Davina Porter’s performance?
Fine. Very acceptable.
What character would you cut from Outlander?
The protagonist.

Good narration! But the writing: zzzz.
Revisado: 11-08-15
Would you try another book from Martin Day and/or Adjoa Andoh?
This was my first Dr Who novel. It will be my last. I know the Dr has millions of adoring fans - I guess I am just missing something. On the other hand, good narration. In fact, I bought this Dr Who because Adjoa Andoh is the narrator. But even her great reading couldn't save this dull fluff.
What was most disappointing about Martin Day’s story?
I read a lot of science fiction, and I expect at least a little, well, science in it. Or at least a reasonable attempt to fake it. This doesn't have that, so either this was just a weak outing for the Dr., or I shouldn't have expected it from Dr. Who . As I said, this was my first Dr. Who.

Historia
For a moment, things seemed to be under control for Breq, the soldier who used to be a warship. Then a search of Athoek Station's slums turns up someone who shouldn't exist, and a messenger from the mysterious Presger empire arrives, as does Breq's enemy, the divided and quite possibly insane Anaander Mianaai—ruler of an empire at war with itself. Breq refuses to flee with her ship and crew, because that would leave the people of Athoek in terrible danger. The odds aren't good, but that's never stopped her before.

Revisado: 10-16-15
This 3rd "Ancillary" book is not quite as compelling as the first two, but still very good. The narration is stellar, though. I read, rather than listened to, the first two "Ancillary" novels, but if Ms Andoh has narrated them, I might buy them again to listen to.

Perfect narration. Pretty good story. Recommended!
Revisado: 12-25-11
Would you consider the audio edition of With Morning Comes Mistfall: Free Story to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version, but this was very good.
What did you like best about this story?
The narration couldn't have been better. Martin's prose in this story is rich, but not too rich.
Any additional comments?
The story is a bit predictable, but still very enjoyable and compelling.

Historia
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Engaging tho fluffy wrt Erikson' s Malazan
Revisado: 05-09-11
I was disappointed in this novel, but that didn't stop me from listening to it to the end (FORTY FIVE HOURS!). I had been on a Steven Erikson kick, and compared to the pain and despair depicted in the Malazan Book of the Fallen and the grace and power it is written with, The Way of Kings feels juvenile. Nonetheless, distracting, and like I said, I did listen to the whole thing.
