Through a Christan lens
Revisado: 07-07-24
Nowhere in the description does it say that this book includes Bible verses at the end of every chapter. While “Setting Boundaries” is well-meaning and does include helpful material, but if you are not a Christian you may find the allusions to God and the Bible are distracting and unnecessary.

Historia
Near an isolated mansion lies a beautiful garden. In this garden grow luscious flowers, shady trees...and a collection of precious “butterflies” - young women who have been kidnapped and intricately tattooed to resemble their namesakes. Overseeing it all is the Gardener, a brutal, twisted man obsessed with capturing and preserving his lovely specimens.

Terrible.
Revisado: 06-28-17
This is the worst book I have ever listened to. I finally couldn't take it any longer and stopped listening with two hours to go. If you thought "Flowers in the Attic" was a compelling read, you might like this ridiculous story.

Historia
Tusker and Lily Smalley stayed on in India. Given the chance to return ‘home’ when Tusker, once a Colonel in the British Army, retired, they chose instead to remain in the small hill town of Pankot, with its eccentric inhabitants and archaic rituals left over from the days of the Empire. Only the tyranny of their imposing landlady threatens to upset the quiet rhythm of their days.

Dreadfully boring.
Revisado: 06-11-17
Can a book be well-written but terribly dull? This book reminded me of obligatory lunches with my 98-year old great aunt, whose only interests are bridge, attending Anglican Church services and complaining about her gardener. I really tried to finish it, but finally decided that life is too short.

Historia
The dead can't speak to us, Professor Madoc had said. But that was a lie. The body Patrick Fort is examining in anatomy class is trying to tell him all kinds of things. But no one hears what he does, and no one understands when he tries to tell them. Life is already strange enough for Patrick - being a medical student with Asperger's Syndrome doesn't come without its challenges. And that's before he is faced with solving a possible murder, especially when no one believes a crime has even taken place.

A wonderful story.

I heartily recommend this book. It ticked all the boxes for me: unusual protagonist, overseas location (Wales, in this case) and intriguing psychological elements. Great narration, too.

Enjoyable police procedural
Revisado: 08-22-12
If you could sum up The Burning in three words, what would they be?
English (as in Scotland Yard), Enjoyable, Feminine Perspective
Who was your favorite character and why?
One of the selling points for this series is of course the lead detective, Maeve Kerrigan, who is smart and fairly unflappable. She definitely has some commitment issues in her personal life that she's going to have to get over...I sometimes find myself losing patience with all the back and forth with her boyfriend/fellow police officer, Rob.
Have you listened to any of Sarah Coomes’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I appreciated Maeve's obvious empathy with the female victims.
Any additional comments?
A good listen if you enjoy British police procedurals with a psychological bent.

Historia
In this wry take on the post-apocalyptic horror novel, a pandemic has devastated the planet. The plague has sorted humanity into two types: the uninfected and the infected, the living and the living dead. Now the plague is receding, and Americans are busy rebuilding civilization under orders from the provisional government based in Buffalo. Their top mission: the resettlement of Manhattan.

Nicely written but boring.
Revisado: 10-24-11
Not terribly much in the plot department. Basically, we're following a character nicknamed Mark Spitz as he spends his days working for the post-outbreak government cleaning up lower Manhattan. He wanders around with his team killing and removing two types of zombies: the active, aggressive kind and the zoned-out, non-hungry kind. Mark Spitz goes through the motions while recalling his past through a series of interlocking flashbacks. That's about it. Not terribly compelling. If you're a zombie fan that likes fast-paced action and adventure, take a pass on this one. Zzzzzz.

Am I the only one...
Revisado: 08-23-10
...distracted by Scott Brick's highly mannered intonation? No matter who the character is, or what kind of regional accent is appropriate, I'm always yanked right out of the story by Mr. Brick's strange vocal affectations. This story is wonderful, but I won't download another book with Scott Brick as the narrator - it's just too frustrating. I give this 4 stars for the story, and no stars for how annoyed I was while listening.
