Here is a wonderful collection of 20 revealing essays on the national pastime. Featuring contributions from Roger Angell, John Thorn, Frank Deford, George Plimpton, Stefan Fatsis, and others (plus a foreword by the legendary Yogi Berra), the stories are united by the authors’ fervent love of the game.

I should have read more about what the book was before purchase. It wasn’t a bad read, it just wasn’t what I expected. It is a collection of well written essays from baseball fans. Some were insightful, others historical, and some were meh.

Historia
Michael Palin's diaries begin in the late 1960s when he began writing for hugely popular programs. He recounts how Monty Python emerged and triumphed. From the success and cult status brought by Monty Python, Palin shares stories from their world tours, their stay at hotels recently trashed by Led Zeppelin, their battles over censorship, and how individually the Pythons went their separate ways. Yet at the same time they were working on the now celebrated series of films, including The Holy Grail....

True diary
Revisado: 02-03-25
The book had far too many weather reports and food descriptions for my taste. A little disappointed in the overall content but it was a true diary of events.

When the Australian Mystery Writers’ Society invited me to their crime-writing festival aboard the Ghan, the famous train between Darwin and Adelaide, I was hoping for some inspiration for my second book. Fiction, this time: I needed a break from real people killing each other. Obviously, that didn’t pan out.

Good book
Revisado: 01-19-25
I did not read the first book in the series, so it felt like a slow start. Overall, I found the book very entertaining with a solid story line bringing every detail together in the end. Half way through it was difficult to put it down.

Historia
A masterpiece of classic science fiction. Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions is a satirical novella by the English schoolmaster Edwin Abbott Abbott, first published in 1884. Written pseudonymously by "A Square", the book used the fictional two-dimensional world of Flatland to comment on the hierarchy of Victorian culture, but the novella's more enduring contribution is its examination of dimensions. Physicists and science popularizers Carl Sagan and Stephen Hawking have both commented on and postulated about the effects of Flatland.

This had been on my list for a while, and I’m glad to have finally gotten to it. It did not disappoint. I appreciated the additional biography piece at the end too.

All over America, families are investing blood, sweat, tears, and retirement savings in their children’s sports careers, all with the ultimate goal of…what exactly? A college scholarship? A professional contract? Simply the taste of victory? Through the lens of the highly competitive world of girls’ softball, Lewis reveals the youth sports industrial complex that has arisen to aggressively monetize after-school pastimes.

Great read for youth sport parents
Revisado: 03-02-24
This was an interesting peek into the advancing world of youth sports and a bit into college admissions. The story may help many parents reflect on their own behaviors at games/practices and question whether the ends justify the means in the pursuit of their child’s sport endeavors. Overall, it is an introduction or essay to these topics more so than a full titled book.

Great Ideas to Introduce in School Systems
Revisado: 03-02-24
Perhaps I’ve listened to Mr. Khan’s voice far too often, but that was the only draw back from the book. As a member of the field of education, the message was poignant and purposeful. I look forward to utilizing many of these ideas to enhance the education process for students in my classrooms.
