Historia
Elsie Bovary is a cow, and a pretty happy one at that—her long, lazy days are spent eating, napping, and chatting with her best friend, Mallory. One night, Elsie and Mallory sneak out of their pasture; but while Mallory is interested in flirting with the neighboring bulls, Elsie finds herself drawn to the farmhouse. Through the window, she sees the farmer's family gathered around a bright Box God—and what the Box God reveals about something called an "industrial meat farm" shakes Elsie's understanding of her world to its core.

Listen if only for the dialog
Revisado: 10-28-24
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, as a writer and actor, Duchovny can do no wrong in my eyes. His fresh take (albeit left-leaning) on a variety of subjects is unique and most entertaining. His wit is unmatched and a hallmark in all of his novels.

Myth turned mod
Revisado: 10-27-24
Duchovny can do no wrong in my eyes. Using his wit and turn of phrase, he transforms fable and modern characters into delightfully digestible fare, even if myth and monsters aren’t your typical read. A fun listen.

Unexpectedly Original
Revisado: 07-12-24
I didn’t think I could be a bigger fan of David Duchovny yet here I am. Truly Like Lightening feels like an homage to Hank Moody (for all you other Californication fans out there), as if “his” 3rd novel to follow God Hates Us All and F**king and Punching. Dry and sassy wit permeates and punctuates in Hankesque fashion, while Duchovny spins a crazy ride of a tale about greed, religion, and societal pressures. I absolutely loved it and what a treat to listen to it read by the author himself. My only reason for the low performance rating was the audio quality, which was a bit muffled.

He doth protest too much…
Revisado: 05-04-24
The most vile, disgusting, disturbing account and I couldn’t NOT finish it. His telling of what “could’ve” but surely happened is undeniable. Likely the only “fiction” is “Charlie’s” identity. Now that he’s dead there are stories that he hired the mob to do his bidding. Perhaps that is true but he was there. There’s no denying that. From the very beginning he sets up Nicole as the aggressor, the “crazy” one with seemingly no accountability on his end. Manipulation by a text book narcissist. He’s getting his just desserts now and that is the only consolation.

Historia
One hot summer night, Lourdes, Fernanda, Ana, Perla, and Pauline hold a séance. Their tipsy laughter turns to terror when the flames burn straight through their prayer candles and Fernanda starts crawling toward her friends and chanting in Nahuatl, the language of their Aztec ancestors. Over the next few weeks, Fernanda starts acting strangely—smearing herself in black makeup, shredding her hands on rose thorns, sucking sin out of the mouths of the guilty. The local priest is convinced it's a demon, but Lourdes suspects it's something else—something far more ancient and powerful.

Not worth it
Revisado: 02-29-24
Did I miss something because it seems this should’ve been billed as a YA novel. Regardless, a poorly executed “romantacy” made worse as an audiobook. The narrator’s delivery was too “nice” for the dark theme. I gave it two stars because the premise seemed intriguing but it was disappointing. Thank goodness it was short. A wasted Audible credit.

Just ok….
Revisado: 10-21-23
Ann Napolitano is a beautiful writer. I discovered her recently when her latest novel was released (2023), Hello Beautiful, and then I read Dear Edward. I’m so glad I read HB first because had I read A Good Hard Look first, I may not have read her again. I struggle finding novels with an original but somewhat “believable” story line, and one in particular in this book fell flat for me. I love her style though and that’s what kept me going because this wasn’t a favorite, it was just ok. It was nice though to see her growth as a writer because HB fit all the criteria for me. I hope we don’t have to wait too long for her next book. ☺️

Why we think it’s a great listen: There’s no gentle way to put this – Frank McCourt’s performance of Angela’s Ashes is just better than the Pulitzer Prize-winning book. Frank McCourt shares his sometimes heartwarming, sometimes heartbreaking story of growing up poor, Irish, and Catholic in the Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir Angela's Ashes.

Irish eyes are laughing
Revisado: 09-20-23
He had to laugh to keep from crying. Angela’s Ashes is an all time favorite. I read it many years ago and couldn’t pass up hearing it narrated by Frankie McCourt himself. Al together tragically beautiful and laugh out loud funny. A must-add to your wish list.

William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. A “Real” Novel!
Revisado: 08-24-23
It’s not often I find a novel enjoyable because the story can come off as ridiculous and contrived. Not so with Hello Beautiful! Relatable, believable, touching, tragic, authentic, and her use of metaphor original and refreshing. While I’m not a basketball or sports injury expert, it was obvious Ms Napolitano did her research. I also enjoyed Ms Tierney’s narration. Well done!
