Historia
It is 1950. London is still reeling from World War II, and Margery Benson, a schoolteacher and spinster, is trying to get through life, surviving on scraps. One day, she reaches her breaking point, abandoning her job and small existence to set out on an expedition to the other side of the world in search of her childhood obsession: an insect that may or may not exist - the golden beetle of New Caledonia. When she advertises for an assistant to accompany her, the woman she ends up with is the last person she had in mind.

wonderful, sympathetic characters
Revisado: 08-11-23
if you enjoy an old fashioned adventure with complex characters that you will care about, this is a good story. bittersweet and poignant, and not overly violent (although not completely placid either, no t no gratuitous violence) or sexed-up, but not boring either....

Historia
For more than two centuries, Winterbourne Hall has stood atop a bluff overseeing the English countryside of Cornwall and the sea beyond. In 1947, Londoner Alice Miller accepts a post as governess at Winterbourne, looking after Captain Jonathan de Grey’s twin children. Falling under the de Greys’ spell, Alice believes the family will heal her own past sorrows. But then, the twins’ adoration becomes deceitful and taunting. Their father, ever distant, turns spiteful and cruel. The manor itself seems to lash out. Alice finds her surroundings subtly altered, her air slightly chilled.

spoiler alert regarding ending
Revisado: 01-18-23
I loved the book, but HATED the ending. I really don't care to get all the way through without a happy ending, so for those of you who would rather know ahead of time, the ending fits in with the gothic, spooky theme I suppose

I'm going through the series. I like learning about the wars and I like the characters, although Maisie becomes "real" more than some of the others (except maybe Billy). I love the narrators voice and reading!

Historia
With the country in the grip of economic malaise, and worried about her business, Maisie Dobbs is relieved to accept an apparently straightforward assignment from an old friend to investigate certain matters concerning a potential land purchase. Her inquiries take her to a picturesque village in Kent during the hop-picking season, but beneath its pastoral surface she finds evidence that something is amiss. To me, these books are cozy without being corny. I love the historical interest and the faith in the goodness of humankind, despite their weakness. I loved this one as much as the others.
