More than I had expected
Revisado: 01-25-24
This was a book selected by another member of my book group. I rolled my eyes after reading the description but, decided to keep an open mind. I was surprised at how quickly I became engrossed in the story. The reader performances are stellar. I’m not sure I liked the way the author wrapped up the story lines in the end but, I understood her choices. I highly recommend this book!

The story is very engaging. Deep questions being asked. Answered differently from the perspective of each character. I really didn’t want the story to end. Two thumbs up for this one!

Historia
Investigative journalist Laura Chambers is back in her tiny hometown of Hillsborough, North Carolina, the one place she swore never to return. Fired from The Boston Globe, her career in shambles, she reluctantly takes a job with the local paper. The work is simple, unimportant, and worst of all, boring - at least until a missing girl turns up dead, the body impeccably clean, dressed to be the picture of innocence. Years earlier, 10-year-old Patty Finch left home and never made it back. But for the people of Hillsborough, Patty was just the beginning.

Surprisingly good
Revisado: 01-15-21
I didn’t expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. The story was compelling. There were enough plot twists to keep me guessing. I found myself talking back to the narrator as she read Laura Chamber’s story to me. I couldn’t believe some of the choices Laura made. “Stop! You’re making a bad decision!,” I heard myself say. She did it anyway. Laura is such a mess. I couldn’t bring myself to like her but I wanted her to succeed. Well worth your time!

At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. Was it the story or Tom Hank’s narration that captured my attention? I’m not sure. Either way, the time I gave to listen to this story was very well spent.

I was skeptical about this Oprah title at first. I didn’t think I could tolerate simplistic life advice accompanied by quotes from Oprah’s friends and acquaintances. I was wrong. I just finished the book and I am so very glad I listened. Thanks, Oprah!

Historia
Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

I so enjoyed this classic!
Revisado: 07-12-16
I've watched several versions of Frankenstein as a movie. I'd always felt them to be campy and trivial. I chose to listen to the book to see, if perhaps, there were more "teeth" to the novel itself. What a pleasant surprise for me! The novel itself portrays the monster with so much more dignity and nuance than the movies I've watched over the years. The narration was mostly wonderful. There were some moments that I longed for a change in character voice. Those moments tended to slip away when I refocused on the story. If you also were never 'required' to read Shelley's Frankenstein while a student, do yourself a favor and listen to it now. You won't regret it!
