A wonderful reading of beautiful ideas

Chloe Cannon is very easy to listen to, even on 2x or higher, which isn't always the case with others.

I found Veronica's book (this one) through a Royal Institution lecture on YouTube featuring her. O'Keane's core ideas are beautifully simple, well put together and come from first principle thinking.

Her hopes for the world, that people with psychosis like schizophrenia (which has affected at least 1 in 100 people throughout history) be welcomed into society just as with people with autism or other non-normal thinking patterns, and her comparison of them to people with broken legs, kidneys and hearts. is extremely well thought out and defined.

Just like 2 generations ago we realized oppression and humiliation of minorities was barbaric, last generation we realized the same with homsexuality. and this generation we're realizing it with gender, next generation we will hopefully see it with our bodies... that our minds are just made of organic matter, and we should not oppress or humiliate those with minority mentality any more than we should do the same to those in wheelchairs or with glasses.

Hopefully this book, and people pushing these thoughts forward will all eventually lead to a better and more loving and peaceful society.

This book is amazing.

I struggled to finish this. it is read extremely dry. A good AI would probably have read it with more feeling. This is unfortunate because books on systems theory are rare and the contents of this book seem good.

A collection of facts and opinions with errors

This audiobook feels more like a very long podcast than an actual book. It even includes intro music at the start of every chapter, which I've never heard in the over 100 books I've listened to on audible.

It includes many errors like suggesting there are 10^26 bytes online and suggested 10^36 in 5 years, which struck me as quite large. When I tried to verify what was true at the time of this books writing, the biggest number I could confirm was only 10^21 bytes on Earth and much less online. These errors are used later in the book and the result of opinions given further diverge from real facts.

This is not a huge deal, and errors like this are common on podcasts and YouTube videos, but I would expect a book to have much fewer errors, and this book does not. These errors occur in every chapter, multiple times, so much that I just started assuming if something sounded unlikely, I assumed they were just incorrect, because everything I checked was incorrect.

Every chapter also just talks about sources the author found and then their opinion of it. While this isn't horrible, it's extremely different from all books I've listened to on the subject of the mind, and was pretty shocking to discover.

It also takes a very long time to get to the books point, the author's hypothesis. The authors original work is maybe 5% of the total book, which was really annoying to discover.

It also jumps around way more than normal, like a series of clickbait articles i.e. one paragraph can be talking about evidence for hive minds, and the next talks about attention schema theory, and the next talks about evolution, and on and on. I found myself feeling like I was going down mental rabbit holes every 10 minutes or so, and kept realizing I was still paying attention, the author just seems to have some sort of attention problem in their writing, which I've also rarely found in other books. Maybe some people like this, but I found it extremely annoying, as I kept feeling like I wasn't paying attention but it was just the author jumping way more than most.

In addition, the book quotes others thousands of times, and it doesn't translate very well in audiobooks,, for example, the author will completely change the subject, then pause for a second, then say "Carl Sagan", letting you know after the fact that they decided to quote someone. It also was rarely important, i.e. the quotes are often loosely related, or were used as a Segway to another jump in attention.

I am a little shocked the reviews are so high on this book because of the above issues. Ultimately I felt this book was a real waste of my time - I would have rathered watched a 15 minute YouTube video on the authors ideas.

Although I dislike Trump, what I dislike more is hiding opinionated attacks on him that are not based in reality behind facts. This book has so many opinions and jabs at the person that it's impossible to enjoy the book for what it's supposed to be

Filled with sometimes funny, sometimes squirt milk out your nose funny, and often times "hey yeah, that really makes sense" sort of words, the subtle art of not giving a fuck is one of the best overall books I've read in the past year

lots of poor plot points. Lots of great ones... not sure I would have bought this book had I known how unoriginal it would have been.
