Historia
In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women—mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends—view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

One of the most powerful books I've ever listened to. I can't find the words to describe the depth of feeling the author produces in me and hopefully everyone else who reads this. It's just beautiful.

Historia
In this riveting popular history, the creator of You Must Remember This probes the inner workings of Hollywood’s glamorous Golden Age through the stories of some of the dozens of actresses pursued by Howard Hughes, to reveal how the millionaire mogul’s obsessions with sex, power, and publicity trapped, abused, or benefited women who dreamt of screen stardom.

I want to take her out to dinner once a week for a year!
Revisado: 06-27-24
Ms. Longworth's deep deep very deep research is unsurpassed in it's scope. As a long-time listener to her podcast "You Must Remember This," I feel safe in knowing that every word she speaks is as extensively researched as it could possibly be - and true to the best of her knowledge. Her unique premise of combining Hollywood history and specifically Howard Hughes' history and the multiple women who played a part in it is brilliant. She has deepened my understanding of, among other things, what it was really like to be a woman in Hollywood during the first half of the 20th century and beyond, such as the terrible decisions women had to make and the outcomes they had to live with. This is not a vapid tell-all biography in the least; it's an in-depth study of massive proportions. Thank you, Karina!!

Give Fiona a Chance! Really!
Revisado: 10-03-23
Initially I felt the same as many of you who have found it hard to adjust to a new narrator. I put the book down and it's been a year - I've just discovered that there is a fourth book and decided to jump into #3, for better or worse. Now I haven't heard Lesley M.'s voice in a over a year and you know what? I think waiting helped! Fiona is a low talker but her Connie Johnson, her Bogdan, even her Ibrahim and Stephen are pretty much spot on. I'm adjusting to the other voices and have high hopes. Go on, give her a chance. Books like these don't come around too often. 🙂

Historia
In "Murder at the Mousetrap," the first Bunburry book, fudge-making and quaffing real ale in the local pub are matched by an undercurrent of passion, jealousy, hatred and murder - laced with a welcome dose of humour. Alfie McAlister has retreated from London to the peace and quiet of the country to recover from a personal tragedy. But an accidental death - which may have been no accident - reveals that the heart of England is far from the tranquil backwater he imagined.

I love this series! Looking forward to more!
Revisado: 06-23-21
These 3 stories are very very well done. The pace is quick and the progress smooth - I get so tired of protagonists trying to convince another character that YES, THERE WAS A MURDER multiple times - that doesn't happen here. The characters are believable and narration terrific - someone here gave Mr. Parker a low score on his American accent - I thought the accents were spot on. More!

Meh
Revisado: 06-10-21
I am SO disappointed! The first two books of the series were sooo warm and engaging and the narration so wonderful that I wanted to join the Order! This book left me flat; I had to speed up the narration because it went so slowly. The new narrator seemed to savor the inflection of the Welsh accent to such an extent that the up and down sing-song way the characters spoke became annoying (Sorry, Ms. Dixon!) The series is called The Sister Agatha and Father Selwyn Mysteries - but Father Selwyn is not a key character this time around. Since Sister Agatha has proved herself to be a good detective, why do her compatriots continually balk at her deductive observations? And why does she continually doubt herself? ~Worst part? The culmination and the motives of the killer. ~ Best part? The inclusion of Sister Gwyneth in Sister Agatha's adventures. If there is a next one, I hope it will be better.:-(

Historia
In the court of King George IV, Major Mearns - an old dog of war and veteran of Willington's army - is the guardian of Windsor Castle. Some would call him a spy; he calls himself a "watcher." Working with his close friend, the resourceful Sergeant Denny, the pair maintain a cool facade behind which they go about their duties quietly and unnoticed. Unnoticed, that is, until the day Mearns receives a parcel containing a gruesome surprise: a pair of severed human legs.

Hoodwinked!
Revisado: 05-20-21
The story seemed to go in a few directions at one. The clever murder mystery set in George IV's era would have been wonderful just on its own - the characters are well thought out and engaging and the narration terrific. MY REAL GRIPE is that I felt hoodwinked by the side plot... it's as if you are ready to go on a wonderful journey and without being told by the driver, you end up at a Pyramid Scheme Pitch. Shame on you, Ms. Butler!

Revisado: 04-09-21
So well-researched and well-written! Other reviewers, I guess, thought this was historical fiction because of the title?! SMH! Elizabeth Norton delivers an account of what REALLY happened - why would anyone want to fictionalize it? Narrator is articulate, composed, and I will definitely listen again.

Having seen the David Suchet/Hugh Fraser adaptation of this many times I was expecting a better written story. I've read lots of Agatha Christie books but this was so protracted it was a chore to finish. And once again I discovered yet another casual and gratuitous anti-semitic remark having no bearing whatsoever on the story, as happens in her early books.

Historia
The sisters of Gwenafwy Abbey have cherished their contemplative life - days spent in prayer, reflection, tending the convent's vegetable gardens and making their award-winning organic cheese, Heavenly Gouda. Life seems perfect, except for Sister Agatha, a die-hard mystery fan who despairs of ever finding any real life inspiration for her own novel. That is, until the abbey's sexton is found dead under an avalanche of gouda. Despite the reservations of the local constable, Sister Agatha is convinced it's murder and the game is afoot.

I was a little disappointed in how the mystery wrapped itself up but you know what? It's Sister Agatha's first case! I'm sure the mysteries will get better. I love the characterization - these people are very real. I also love the references to other Murder Mystery icons- brilliant! I ordered a box of Welsh Brew before I even finished the book. Looking forward to #2!

Historia
As yuletide settles upon Gwenafwy Abbey, the rural Welsh convent's peace is shattered when Tiffany Reese, president of the Village Art Society, is found dead on the floor of the parish hall. Sister Agatha, whose interests lie more with reading and writing mystery stories than with making the abbey's world-renowned organic gouda, is not shy about inserting herself into the case. With the not-entirely eager assistance of Father Selwyn, she begins her investigation.
