Once an Eagle is the story of one special man, a soldier named Sam Damon, and his adversary over a lifetime, fellow officer Courtney Massengale. Damon is a professional who puts duty, honor, and the men he commands above selfinterest. Massengale, however, brilliantly advances his career by making the right connections behind the lines and in Washington’s corridors of power.

Great War Novel
Revisado: 11-01-22
This is a long book, so you have to be committed to it. That being said, the story arc is great, taking the reader from WWI through the beginning of Vietnam. An excellent study in command and leadership.

Historia
Written by the author of the Maneuver Warfare Handbook and an active-duty USMC officer with experience in Iraq, 4th Generation Warfare Handbook is the doctrine for a new generation of war. Over the last 40 years, the world has gradually entered into a post-Clausewitzian state where the wars are undeclared, the battlefields can be anywhere, the uniforms are optional, and the combatants as well as the targets are often "civilian."

Great Intro to the Next Evolution
Revisado: 10-26-20
Very salient for those studying insurgencies at home and abroad. The author is lay out what modern warfare looks like and how to best to address it. This is a high level overview, not a tactics manual, so keep that in mind.

Historia
The culture of “safety” and its intolerance of opposing viewpoints has left many young people anxious and unprepared for adult life. Lukianoff and Haidt offer a comprehensive set of reforms that will strengthen young people and institutions, allowing us all to reap the benefits of diversity, including viewpoint diversity. This is a book for anyone who is confused by what’s happening on college campuses today, or has children, or is concerned about the growing inability of Americans to live and work and cooperate across party lines.

Just OK
Revisado: 07-06-19
This book had a lot of good information about how people can be fooled into believing things that just aren’t so, whether it is through random events, biological processes, or some other means. On the other hand, in my experience other authors have made the same points more vividly and memorably. Overall it’s decent but not my favorite.

Historia
The story of Captain D. Michael Abrashoff and his command of USS Benfold has become legendary inside and outside the Navy. Now Abrashoff offers this fascinating tale of top-down change for anyone trying to navigate today's uncertain business seas. When Captain Abrashoff took over as commander of the Benfold, a ship armed with every cutting-edge system available, it was like a business that had all the latest technology but only some of the productivity.

Very Good
Revisado: 09-26-16
This is a great book about transforming a derelict organization into a fully functioning one without the benefit of being able to make a ton of personnel changes. Leadership is therefore key to making this change. My only real criticism is the somewhat regular repetition of anecdotes (or parts of them), which I will concede could have been an intentional device used so the reader would have them close at hand. I'll likely be listening to this book again.

Historia
The measure of the executive, Peter Drucker reminds us, is the ability to "get the right things done". This usually involves doing what other people have overlooked as well as avoiding what is unproductive. Intelligence, imagination, and knowledge may all be wasted in an executive job without the acquired habits of mind that mold them into results. Drucker identifies five practices essential to business effectiveness that can and must be learned.

Historia
On a warm spring evening in South Los Angeles, a young man is shot and killed on a sidewalk minutes away from his home, one of the thousands of Black Americans murdered that year. His assailant runs down the street, jumps into an SUV, and vanishes, hoping to join the scores of killers in American cities who are never arrested for their crimes. But as soon as the case is assigned to Detective John Skaggs, the odds shift.

Thought provoking
Revisado: 06-24-16
This is an interesting book with a great narrative arc. The author does a great job of using one particular homicide in South Central LA to talk about homicide three more broadly. I don't agree with everything she's putting forward, but it is quite thought provoking. Highly recommended.

Historia
This reissue of Thomas Sowell’s classic study of decision making, which includes a preface by the author, updates his seminal work in the context of The Vision of the Anointed. Sowell, one of America’s most celebrated public intellectuals, describes in concrete detail how knowledge is shared and disseminated throughout modern society. He warns that society suffers from an ever-widening gap between firsthand knowledge and decision making—a gap that threatens not only our economic and political efficiency but our very freedom.

A bit dated because it was written in the heart of the Cold War. The thoughts and theories have stood the test of time, but some of the examples are tired.
