I liked that this book was read and presented by talented actors, Mary and Melissa. They converted a reading to a performance, making it more real and impactful than the words alone could have been. I also liked how heartfelt and value driven were so many of the words and segments. The only thing I didn’t like was that the book came to an end. I would have been delighted if the book, like the series on which it was reporting, could have continued indefinitely.

This is the story of the gradual and incomplete evolution of one of the truly great people of our time. The authors have given a wonderful example of good journalism. They have covered many elements of this complex man, lifetime, and industry. There is a feeling of careful balance, with respect for a very human mix of delight and (some) disappointment. I am impressed and grateful. It was a special pleasure listening to this book as it is so beautifully delivered. It felt like the author (the 2 authors chose to write in the first person, which I consider especially appreciate) was speaking directly to me in a very knowledgeable and pleasing manner. If you care at all about the process of creativity, personal technology, or the Apple company, I can't imagine you not being delighted with this book.

I've been impressed by and deeply enjoyed all of Dr. Gawande's books and other writings...but none as much as this masterwork. As a doctor myself, I'm inspired by his insightful, humane and tender ways of dealing with the many complex issues related to talking about, managing, and making the most of end-of-life decisions and experiences. In addition to recommending this book to family members and friends, I will make sure that it is front and center as a springboard for reflection and discussion among the educators and students in the multiple new medical schools we are now planning.
