Historia
Nineteen years ago, I was plucked from the heart of a bloody massacre that spared nobody else. Small. Fragile. An enigma. Now ward to a powerful High Master who knows too much and says too little, I lead a simple life, never straying from the confines of an imaginary line I've drawn around the castle grounds.

Took awhile but well written
Revisado: 03-19-24
This was a tough book for me. I’ve had it over a year and attempted to read multiple times, but kept dnr‘ing it. It’s slow, a little messy and confusing in the beginning, it wasn’t really clear what was happening and Olaith is painful to read for awhile. We get stuck in her head and her emotions are definitely immature and whiny. The book doesn’t actually get really interesting until 3/4 of the way through. There still isn’t a lot of explaining on how to characters know each other or why they are important. It’s kind of like the author drops you into the middle of a muddy puddle- all you can see is the messy place you’ve been dropped in and then progressively you can see the ripples pushing out from where you’ve been dropped. But you don’t realize you’re in a puddle until the end of the book and you can see more of the storyline showing up. It is well written and I’m hoping the second book clears up the characters and the storyline.
The books definitely has some triggers as it’s a dark Rapzuel retelling with Stockholm’s syndrome, grooming age gap father figure love interest, definitely manipulation and physical abuse.Spice is 2.5-there’s some but most of it is her fantasies.

What can I say? I’m a sucker for mythology and fairytale stories. This was such a well thought out story and book. Beautifully published and produced and the narrator was a perfect fit

Takes a bit
Revisado: 10-04-22
This book took awhile. The narrator spoke slowly and dramatically in the beginning, but middle to end, when the actual story picked up, was very enjoyable. Book also took awhile to get interesting. But towards the end, things really picked up. Can’t wait to hear the next one.

Historia
A soldier raised as heir to an empire, Zarrah is motivated by two truths. The first is that the Veliant family murdered her mother. And the second is that her pursuit of vengeance will put every last one of them in their graves. The Endless War between Maridrina and Valcotta has raged for generations, leaving thousands of Zarrah’s people dead and countless more orphaned. So when she’s given command of the contested city of Nerastis, Zarrah is prepared to do whatever it takes to destroy the Maridrinian forces who oppose her. And to kill the Veliant prince who leads them.

Great series!

Loved these books so far. Didn’t love the male narrators choice in narration. Sometimes it was awesome but he had a weird way of delivering female voices and regular reading. Otherwise is was great!

What a surprise!
Revisado: 09-22-22
This book is excellent! I wasn’t sure because many of my freebies here haven’t been great. But the characters, the story, the intensity and excitement, and a little spice; this book has it all! The female narrator is excellent. She’s done Sarah J Mass and a few other books and I always love her. The only thing I struggled with is the male narrator. He sounds like Ron Swanson from Parks and Rec. which could be cool except he has no feeling or intensity when he speaks. Just rough and gruff, almost monotone. Otherwise, the audio and the book are so well done and I cannot wait to start the others!
