Historia
A runaway international bestseller, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry followed its unassuming hero on an incredible journey as he traveled the length of England on foot—a journey spurred by a simple letter from his old friend Queenie Hennessy, writing from a hospice to say goodbye. Harold believed that as long as he kept walking, Queenie would live. What he didn’t know was that his decision to walk had caused her both alarm and fear. How could she wait? What would she say? Forced to confront the past, Queenie realizes she must write again.

Historia
The third and final volume takes us through World War II, FDR's death, the founding of the UN, and Eleanor Roosevelt's death in 1962. It follows the arc of war and the evolution of a marriage as the first lady realized the cost of maintaining her principles even as the country and her husband were not prepared to adopt them. Eleanor Roosevelt continued to struggle for her core issues - economic security, New Deal reforms, racial equality, and rescue - when they were sidelined by FDR while he marshaled the country through war.

What a woman!
Revisado: 09-06-22
This series of three books on the life of Eleanor Roosevelt not only told about an amazing woman, whose passions resound in society still, but filled in a bunch of gaps in my history from school.
I’m not sure I could have read these books but am delighted to have listened.

Historia
The most gorgeously theatrical of all Dickens's novels, Nicholas Nickleby follows the delightful adventures of a hearty young hero in 19th-century England. Nicholas, a gentleman's son fallen upon hard times, must set out to make his way in the world. His journey is accompanied by some of the most swaggering scoundrels and unforgettable eccentrics in Dickens's pantheon.

Revisado: 10-10-21
Having read or listened to several Dickens novel, I realize just how much his words speak to our times. Greed, avarice, injustice still prevail. But in this novel it does not sour the good characters. And so it should be with us.

Windrip forcibly gains control of Congress and the Supreme Court and, with the aid of his personal paramilitary storm troopers, turns the United States into a totalitarian state.

If this book does not make your skin crawl with fear of the far tight and their plans, nothing will. It is a tale of forbidding for those who cherish the freedom we claim to have in this country. If we allow the former administration back in, this will be our fate.

This book scared the life out of me. And not just because of the horrors of Nazi Germany. The early days of Hitler remind me all too much of now. It reminded me to stay vigilant against incorrect thinking and the scapegoating of the other.

Historia
It's difficult to imagine a nation with a history more compelling for Americans than Russia. Before the collapse of the Soviet Union, this was the nation against which we measured our own nation's values and power and with whom war, if it ever came, could spell unimaginable catastrophe for our planet.Yet many Americans have never had the opportunity to study Russia in depth, and to see how the forces of history came together to shape a future so different from the dreams of most ordinary Russian people, eager to see their nation embrace Western values of progress, human rights, and justice.

History lovers only
Revisado: 11-22-20
I love history. If you don’t, you might not care for this series.
The format is great. Though I lived through a good portion of the Soviet Union and Cold War, I did not know how it all came to be.
And though I had studied the Romanov dynasty, I appreciated how this series put it into perspective.
I have always wanted to know more about Russia. This satisfied my itch, for the time being, that is.

From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.

Sometimes history is just cold facts. But this history helped me understand how we have gotten to where we are in this country in a very personal way. I feel like I know the three main characters as old friends, while learning a part of history not taught in school. Of course, some of this history is during my lifetime.

Historia
The year was 1917. As a war raged across the world, young American women flocked to work, painting watches, clocks, and military dials with a special luminous substance made from radium. It was a fun job, lucrative and glamorous - the girls themselves shone brightly in the dark, covered head to toe in the dust from the paint. They were the radium girls. As the years passed, the women began to suffer from mysterious and crippling illnesses.

Though this is a heartbreaking story, it is a good way to learn some history of horrible business practices. These poor women and their families show a courage not recognized often.
