Historia
Bree Matthews is alone. She exiled herself from the Legendborn Order, cut her ancestral connections, and turned away from the friends who can’t understand the impossible cost of her powers. This is the only way to keep herself—and those she loves—safe. But Bree’s decision has come with a terrible price: an unbreakable bargain with the Shadow King himself, a shapeshifter who can move between humanity, the demon underworld, and the Legendborn secret society.

Mariah’s reader is TERRIBLE
Revisado: 04-10-25
I listened to the others on audio and loved them. In this one, the storylines get splintered, so more readers do the audiobook. The one who reads for Mariah is awful—clearly didn’t listen to the first books for Abbott-Pratt’s voices and mangles the southern accent. She also uses bizarre phrasing, taking breaths after articles and verbs. I cannot believe someone okayed this. Deonn would be horrified at the Welsh especially.
I’m like a quarter of the way through and had to pause to leave this review because Mariah’s reader is unbearable. Heads up for other listeners: using 1.2 speed for her sections helps.

Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Fine!
Revisado: 09-20-24
I see why this is popular. From the perspective of someone who has read a LOT of speculative fiction, both pop and literary, its shortcomings are: predictable character types, flaws, and development, *extremely* heavy-handed foreshadowing, and a somewhat underdeveloped world / lore system. I suspect this last one will be remedied in sequels.
Specifically this audio edition: I don’t think the reader did a great job. Fine…but not great. The male characters all sound alike. Emotional moments and exclamations are overdone.
I suppose the bottom line is that it’s worth a listen if you’re interested, but reading a hard copy might be better.

Historia
Feyre has undergone more trials than one human woman can carry in her heart. Though she’s now been granted the powers and lifespan of the High Fae, she is haunted by her time Under the Mountain and the terrible deeds she performed to save the lives of Tamlin and his people. As her marriage to Tamlin approaches, Feyre’s hollowness and nightmares consume her. She finds herself split into two different people: one who upholds her bargain with Rhysand, High Lord of the feared Night Court, and one who lives out her life in the Spring Court with Tamlin.

FAR better than book 1
Revisado: 05-02-24
Much much better than book 1. Feyre is still obnoxious, but in the context of other characters she starts to make more sense (and they are interesting and likable).
Wish this reader would decide how to pronounce Rhysand. But book 3 is read by someone else so oh well.

Mediocre and Derivative
Revisado: 05-02-24
I was reading this to see what all the fuss is about. First it feels like Twilight, Beauty and the Beast, and 50 Shades, which are honestly all the same story, puréed in a blender. But then you realize when Feyre is put to the trials it’s 100% Cupid and Psyche. Feyre herself is insufferably obnoxious. Somehow the book is very engaging though, easy and quick to read.
Knowing the spoiler of where Feyre ends up / who she ends up with would have made this much more enjoyable; consider looking up the spoiler or just reading some of book 2 first and read book 1 like a flashback when it feels right.

Better than book 1, but…
Revisado: 05-02-24
This one’s better than book 1 but not as good as book 2. Some extremely stupid contrived moments. Rhys continues to be a favorite, and I liked meeting more of the High Lords. Also it has about 5 endings. You can honestly stop when they all meet after the XXX at the manor house.
New reader (from books 1&2) is too emotive, often reading in a way I wouldn’t have interpreted the character or overdoing it. Makes Feyre even more annoying at times.

Leckie and Andoh are the best!
Revisado: 06-19-23
I’ve read and listened to all of Leckie’s books read by Andoh multiple times. I was really impressed that Andoh is still able to make new characters sound so distinct!! Like she doesn’t re-use tone / cadence / accent from other books. Even Sphene sounded different because different ancillary body, of course.
Enae reminded me a lot of Ingray, but otherwise the novel delivers fresh content and reveals a LOT of new info about the Presger Translators. I loved them in the other books and Qven was by far my favorite character in this.
As always, Leckie is interested in inheritance and family relationships. I very much admire the way she uses neopronouns and treats gender in the Radch universe in general.

Historia
For a moment, things seemed to be under control for Breq, the soldier who used to be a warship. Then a search of Athoek Station's slums turns up someone who shouldn't exist, and a messenger from the mysterious Presger empire arrives, as does Breq's enemy, the divided and quite possibly insane Anaander Mianaai—ruler of an empire at war with itself. Breq refuses to flee with her ship and crew, because that would leave the people of Athoek in terrible danger. The odds aren't good, but that's never stopped her before.

The best
Revisado: 02-20-23
I’ve listened to this book (series) at least 5 times. Honestly I don’t even know what to say I love it so much. Brilliant. Andoh does such good voices (the Translators are my favorites) and the plot is *chefs kiss*. I’ve read a lot of sci-fi and other literature, and I love it when a story can still surprise me. You do definitely need to read/listen to the other books first. Then, enjoy!

Cool premise trash writing
Revisado: 11-26-19
I made it through two and a half hours, but I’m quitting. I’ve read a lot of quality sci-fi and this ain’t it.
Over-written with unnecessarily complicated words, like some kind of college first-year trying to sound smart by using a thesaurus.
Reads like the author’s power fantasy of having complete control over a helpless adolescent girl (ew), typical female character written by a man (e.g. she “quivers” and is helpless), and even an advanced robot society 1000 years removed from ours managed to sound outdated with the inclusion of biological essentialism. YAWN. It’s 2019, don’t waste your time on this outdated (shockingly recently written) garbage.

Startling, unusual, and yet irresistably readable, Among Others is at once the compelling story of a young woman struggling to escape a troubled childhood, a brilliant diary of first encounters with the great novels of modern fantasy and SF, and a spellbinding tale of escape from ancient enchantment.

Revisado: 11-08-18
Such a charming reader with incredible accent. Gorgeous, woven plot with strong narrated voice through the device of journal writing. Not thrilling or suspenseful, but builds calm curiosity and evenly-paced action. I loved the magical world-view so much—it will really stick with me.
I dinged the story one star because you REALLY should be a reader of scifi to enjoy this novel. I knew about 3/4 of the references she made, but I can’t imagine trying to read this without some SF background.

The Borderlands aren't like anywhere else. Don't try to smuggle a phone or any other piece of technology over the wall that marks the Border - unless you enjoy a fireworks display in your backpack. (Ballpoint pens are okay.) There are elves, harpies, and - best of all as far as Elliot is concerned - mermaids. Elliot? Who's Elliot? Elliot is 13 years old. He's smart and just a tiny bit obnoxious. Sometimes more than a tiny bit. When his class goes on a field trip and he can see a wall that no one else can see, he is given the chance to go to school in the Borderlands.

Engaging and fun start to finish!
Revisado: 07-17-18
A romp through typical fantasy stories, with layers of meta-awareness, social commentary, solid feminism, and politics. The characters are well developed and engaging, and the narrative has a really great progression. Well paced and riveting the whole way through. HIGHLY recommend!
