Historia
Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

I LOVED this book. I have many many audio books. This has got to be one of the best ever...I have just finished it and I am already missing Owen and the other characters. Engrossing, and life affirming, I can not recommend enough........

ended? really?
Revisado: 03-24-16
This book is beautifully written, a powerfully evocative portrayal of life on the homefront in WW2. I really enjoyed the listen and found it educational and thought provoking .....BUT...I couldn't believe it had ended. I thought I must have skipped to the end by accident, leaving out a few key chapters. I felt that there were too many loose ends ..and characters that seemed to have had no purpose /resolution. ...but i wonder retrospectively if this was because I had not read the earlier 2 books. I am going to give the earlier books a read...and will be interested to hear what others think.

Historia
Mrs. Sookie Poole of Point Clear, Alabama, has just married off the last of her daughters and is looking forward to relaxing and perhaps traveling with her husband, Earle. The only thing left to contend with is her mother, the formidable Lenore Simmons Krackenberry. Lenore may be a lot of fun for other people, but is, for the most part, an overbearing presence for her daughter. Then one day, quite by accident, Sookie discovers a secret about her mother's past that knocks her for a loop and suddenly calls into question everything she ever thought she knew about herself, her family, and her future.

This book raised some interesting issues about identity and taught me some new facts about women in world war 2. It was also a gentle tail with some appealing characters, but for me something didn't quite work. I just wanted the lead character to stand up for herself and stop being everybodies door mat!!!!

The antidote to stress
Revisado: 09-07-14
I love these little stories in this book, which is a follow up to My family and Other Animals. Set in pre war Greece / Corfu, Gerald Durrell, a boy at the time, describes the exploits and adventures of his eccentric family. Some scenes had me laughing out loud, and the authors powers of description were such that at times i could almost feel the warm Greek sun on my face ................ the perfect antidote to modern day stresses, let yourself be transported in time and place..............

On that same cold and snowy night, Ursula Todd is born, lets out a lusty wail, and embarks upon a life that will be, to say the least, unusual. A great listen, a brilliant book
Revisado: 09-22-13
What if you could live your life all over again? Turn a different corner, change one small thing, and everything would have been better.........or would it? Would we just encounter different sorrows or challenges, would the overall outcome be just the same?. Sometimes life is just so random and for all our planning, chance still has a powerful role to play. This is Kate Atkinson at her very best, cleverly and brilliantly written, and set during a fascinating period of history. I cannot recommend this book highly enough, I will definitely be listening to this book again!

Historia
Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does, even down to how he butters his toast. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning the mail arrives, and within the stack of quotidian minutiae is a letter addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl from a woman he hasn’t seen or heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye.

Hiding behind the ordinary things
Revisado: 09-22-13
This is a lovely book on many levels. Harold Fry is an ordinary man, with an ordinary life. Hardly interesting, hardly worthy of a second glance. Then one day he embarks on a journey to see an old friend, and in the process he embarks on a journey that helps him begin to find himself again. We all have complex histories, moments of triumph, moments of extreme pain and sorrow. We are none of us as we appear on the surface. Sometimes we hide behind the ordinary things in life because remembering who we are, and the losses we have experienced is just too painful. However, it is also a story about how human spirit and love can triumph over adversity. This is a lovely story, and a reminder that there is more to every one than meets the eye, and that love, compassion and small acts of kindness can make all the difference. Beautiful.

Historia
Nora Eldridge, a 37-year-old elementary school teacher in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who long ago abandoned her ambition to be a successful artist, has become the "woman upstairs", a reliable friend and tidy neighbor always on the fringe of others' achievements. Then into her classroom walks Reza Shahid, a child who enchants as if from a fairy tale. He and his parents - dashing Skandar, a Lebanese scholar and professor at the École Normale Supérleure; and Sirena, an effortlessly glamorous Italian artist - have come to Boston for Skandar to take up a fellowship at Harvard.

Let me tell you about an Angry woman........
Revisado: 09-17-13
I read reviews of this book exclaiming what a powerful exploration of female anger it was. At the end of this book I think I was only marginally less angry than Nora the lead character. If you want to waste 11 hours and 1 minute of your life listening to endless descriptive passages about self obsessed, nacissistic, whining, whinging characters then this is the book for you. If you come across enough unlikeable people in your real life to keep you going and dont need to fill your spare time with even more then i suggest you dont purchase this title. This would have made a good short story but 11 hours!!....i might ask audible to refund my credit, too bad they cant refund my time.
