Couldn't finish due to audio levels
Revisado: 05-04-22
The story seemed interesting. I tried to listen for a few hours, but the inconsistent audio levels made it extremely unpleasant. The narrator speaks softly except when reading lines spoken by a character. The spoken lines are quite a bit louder. I could not find a volume that would allow me to hear most of the story without getting my ear drums blown out when a character was speaking.

Historia
Only mutual communication can forge an alliance with the planet's sentient species and prove that mammals are more than tools. Forced to land on a planet they aren't prepared for, human colonists rely on their limited resources to survive. The planet provides a lush but inexplicable landscape—trees offer edible, addictive fruit one day and poison the next, while the ruins of an alien race are found entwined in the roots of a strange plant. Conflicts between generations arise as they struggle to understand one another and grapple with an unknowable alien intellect.

Surprising
Revisado: 05-28-21
I almost didn't make it through the beginning of the book. The narration was a little bland, and it was confusing initially. About an hour in though, the story sucked me in and it was a great ride. I immediately purchased and listened to the sequel after finishing.

Randy and Jason Sklar have a knack for exploring what makes America’s cities unique and wonderful, whether it’s finding out who in San Diego serves the best burritos, why basketball is so popular among those in Bloomington, or why the people of Portland can't let go of their old airport carpeting.

Not what I was expecting
Revisado: 09-19-18
There were a few good laughs in here, but it wasn't funny or interesting enough to fill multiple hours of listening.
It felt like I was listening to multiple episodes of a podcast or TV show. The music between segments was completely unnecessary, and annoying. You hear them working out some of their location-specific material before shows, and then delivering the same material at the show.
The most disappointing thing to me was that the description sounded very interesting, but it wasn't accurate. As I started going through reviews after getting about an hour into this, I was surprised by how many reviews thought it was great.

Should be titled, "Half Truths and Lies"
Revisado: 02-11-15
I was only able to get through the first 2 chapters, but the author had already surpassed my limit for BS. Much of the information about running and the Indian's lifestyle was wrong. It is pointless to go on. Look at the Amazon reviews on the book, particularly the most helpful low ranking reviews. Based on the overall reviews, I believe the story is good, but it is mostly fiction.
The narrator was good.

Historia
Based on the true story of Alexander Selkirk, who survived alone for almost five years on an uninhabited island off the coast of Chile, The Mysterious Island is considered by many to be Jules Verne’s masterpiece. “Wide-eyed mid-nineteenth-century humanistic optimism in a breezy, blissfully readable translation by Stump” (Kirkus Reviews), here is the enthralling tale of five men and a dog who land in a balloon on a faraway, fantastic island of bewildering goings-on and their struggle to survive....

Similar to 20,000 leagues
Revisado: 06-04-14
This book is very similar to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Personalities from that previous book can be found in here, as well as many of the interpersonal dynamics. It is interesting to see the descriptions of what the characters were able to accomplish on the Island. All in all, I prefer this book to 20,000 Leagues. I found 20,000 much more tedious although that book probably would have delighted me if I had lived in an earlier age without easy access to nature documentaries. The narrator does a good job and he is very clear in his diction. I was able to listen to this book at 3X speed with no issues.

Historia
There are two supreme predators on the planet with the most complex brains in nature: humans and orcas. In the 20th century alone, one of these animals killed 200 million members of its own species, the other killed none. Jeffrey Masson’s fascinating new book begins here: There is something different about us. In Beasts he demonstrates that the violence we perceive in the "wild" is mostly a matter of projection. We link the basest human behavior to animals, to "beasts" ("he behaved no better than a beast"), and claim the high ground for our species.

Challenging Point of View
Revisado: 05-15-14
Would you listen to Beasts again? Why?
Parts of It. There is a lot of information presented in the book.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The description of how bulls are prepared for bull fights was very informative. I had no idea that bulls were put at such a tremendous disadvantage and treated so poorly before the event.
Any additional comments?
I think the author puts forward an interesting idea about the root of all problems in the animal kingdom. The hypothesis put forward is that humans barbaric treatment of each other, the animals we use for food, and the destruction of habitat cause animals to behave more violently than they normally would. There are facts and conjecture presented next to each other and it is difficult to know which is which. The author seems skeptical about some scientific studies (maybe with good reason) and then completely credulous about some fantastic claims of animal benevolence. I do think this book is worth listening to as it will most likely challenge your point of view; however, I think the author over-reaches in making his argument.

Historia
Ernest Hemingway said, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn". One hundred years after its author’s death, this classic remains remarkably modern and poignantly relevant. In this new edition, Elijah Wood reads Huck in a youthful voice that may be the closest interpretation to Twain’s original intent. His performance captures the excitement and confusion of adolescence and adventure.

Who was your favorite character and why?
Huckleberry
Any additional comments?
This was a fantastic performance from Woods. The books is very entertaining up until the last few chapters. The end of the book turns into a farce, but the first 90% is wonderful and well worth your time.
