A real gem
Revisado: 06-05-16
I purchased this book several months ago as a Daily Deal. I had never heard of this author or narrator before and the title didn't do much for me; but the reviews were good so I took a chance. When I finally got around to listening to it I was shocked and very much surprised at what an excellent book this was. The storyline is about a student, Joe Talbert, doing a bio project on a dying Vietnam veteran, and he gets in way over his head. There are good guys, bad guys, family issues, and dangerous situations, which the main character, with the help of a neighbor, must deal with head-on. The drama is fast paced, there are multiple plots (but not confusing), the narration is excellent, and I didn't lose track of the number of characters in the book. Also, the ending is somewhat emotional but very satisfying. This is one of the few books in my library that I listened to twice. Highly recommend.

Not as much fun as the first book
Revisado: 10-03-15
John Lago, from The Intern's Hanbook, is back. He's together with his wife Alice and throughout the book they romp from one unbelievable exploit to another, gleefully assassinating as many bad guys as they can, and there are plenty of them to go around. The relationship with Alice does get a little bizarre with some almost deadly results, but amazingly it comes together. What is really amazing is how they get themselves in and out of impossible situations, and they do it with an unbelievable level of "cool."
This is a book that I would think about using a credit on. Knowing what I know now, I would wait for it to go on sale.
Pete Simonelli's narration is once again, superb. It raised it to 3 stars.

Historia
Jack Wade, a claims adjuster for California Fire and Life Mutual Insurance Company, is one of the best arson investigators around. He's a man who knows fire, who can read the traces it leaves behind like a roadmap. When he's called in to examine an unusual claim, the tracks of the fire tell him that something's wrong. So wrong that he violates his own cardinal rule - "You don't get personal, you don't get emotional. Whatever you do, you don't get involved" - and plunges into the case.

Excellent book - with a great narration
Revisado: 09-03-15
You would think that a book about insurance would be long and boring, but Don Winslow is a master storyteller, and this book doesn't disappoint. This book is about arson, murder, the Russian mob, and nonstop action. Not what you would think about with insurance. The main character, Jack Wade, is an ex cop who works for the insurance company as a claims adjuster. While investigating a fire with a death, he gets caught up in a whirlwind of mobsters, crooked lawyers and judges, double-crosses, and as always - plenty of action with many twists in the plot and some very big surprises. Would highly recommend. WARNING; if bad language is a turn-off for you, then you might want to rethink this book. However, the bad language works here as it's mostly 'mob speak.'
I never heard of John Lindstrom as a narrator, but his narration was perfect. His voice was clear with a nice, easy tempo; and his accents were were spot-on without over doing them. Really enjoyed this book.

This novel should have been named "Tea for Me". If you're into novels that mostly describe the different ingredients in various teas, or smoothies, or the joy of a vegan lifestyle, then this book's for you. Somewhere between descriptions of tea and smoothies there is a story, but I found the listen too frustrating to continue and dropped it part way into the second half. The one bright spot was the narration. Generally, a good narrator can elevate a mediocre book, but unfortunately Julia Motyka's reading couldn't save this one.

John Lago is a very bad guy. But he’s the very best at what he does. And what he does is infiltrate top-level companies and assassinate crooked executives while disguised as an intern. Interns are invisible. That’s the secret behind HR, Inc., the elite “placement agency” that doubles as a network of assassins for hire who take down high-profile targets that wouldn’t be able to remember an intern’s name if their lives depended on it.

Fun book
Revisado: 07-23-15
This book has been sitting in my library for several months and I finally got around to listening to it. It really is a fun read with enough interesting characters, action and storyline to make this a good, not great, book. Some scenes are unbelievable, but again, it's a fun book and the scenes and characters work.
I really like Pete Simonelli's narration. His voice is somewhat gravelly, but there's no heavy breathing, gasping, swallowing, or phoney accents. Perfect for this type of book. I will definitely get the sequel.

One of the best books ever
Revisado: 07-23-15
Of the many books about the American Civil War, Killer Angels is clearly one of the best. Michael Shaara has written an epic, sweeping novel about the battle of Gettysburg. Make no mistake, this is a work of fiction, based on fact, where all the major characters were real people and here they come to life. Sahara delves into their personalities, thoughts, conversations, decisions, and doubts about the coming battle. He does a magnificent job on the interactions between all the major players and how it leads up to the tragic decisions that were made. You don't have to be a history buff to enjoy this book. An absolute must read.
I didn't know who Stephen Hoye was, but his reading was excellent. I rate him as one of the better narrators at Audible. I'm now looking for more books that he narrates.

Excellent Narration
Revisado: 07-13-15
A good narrator can take a story from so-so to very good, and Peter Hermann is clearly one of the best narrators at Audible. His reading made the book enjoyable - even those scenes that didn't seem to add anything to the plot line or overall story.
Once again the main character, Dewey Andreas, has his "superman" hat on where he kicks butt, shoots a lot of bad guys, performs surgery on himself, leaps tall buildings, etc., etc., etc. This time it's a Russian computer hacker who is out for revenge against America that Dewey has to stop. He does this by fighting his way across the U.S., ends up in Russia, then back to New York, all in a couple of days. Nothing boring about this book.
Mostly because of Peter Hermann's narration, this was an enjoyable listen. Would definitely recommend.

Good story...Terrible narration
Revisado: 06-12-15
Bronson Pinchot is an accomplished actor and an excellent narrator. However, for whatever reason, it was decided that he narrate this book speaking with a horrible Russion accent. Between the accent and his reading in hushed tones made listening for over 13 hours very frustrating. There were some characters that an accent fit very well; but not the entire book. Strongly suggest listening to the sample before deciding to purchase.
Storyline was great, which helped to make it to the end of the book.

In the years that followed he became a part of their family. And as he battled to create a bond with the elephants, he came to realize that they had a great deal to teach him about life, loyalty, and freedom.

Usually I don't get books like this, thinking it's a lecture on how bad we are to the planet with our polluting ways. After reading all of the reviews, I gave it a shot. I'm am so glad that I did. Character development, narration, and story line was excellent. Lawrence Anthony inherits a herd of wild elephants and he develops a relationship with them that borders on being human. There is plenty of drama and the story moves along quickly. After finishing this book, I started looking at National Geographic and Animal Planet channels for any programs on elephants. Lawrence Anthony has written an excellent novel, and I would highly recommend.
Lawrence, RIP. The world will miss you.

Excellent
Revisado: 01-01-15
Every so often you catch a real gem that goes way beyond your expectations and this is clearly one of them. I put this in the top five of favorite novels in my library. Don Winslow spins a masterful story of a retired Mafia hit man who is reluctantly dragged back into the business where very little is what it seems. The plot winds it way from the present to flashbacks to build on the story, and build to an explosive ending. Violence aside (nowhere near as violent as The Power of the Dog), there is a certain sweetness to the main character, which makes him very likable (even though he's a bad guy).
Dennis Boutsikaris's narration is superb. His voice is crisp and clear, which really helps when you listen to a novel while driving. And you always know which character is speaking. I would place him on a level with Ray Porter as one of Audible's best readers.
Don Winslow is a master storyteller. His characters have great depth; the plot has many twists, turns, crosses and double crosses; and the storyline keeps you guessing until the end. Would highly recommend.
