Historia
Booker T. Washington fought his way out of slavery to become an educator, statesman, political shaper, and proponent of the "do-it-yourself" idea. In his autobiography, he describes his early life as a slave on a Virginia plantation, his steady rise during the Civil War, his struggle for education, his schooling at the Hampton Institute, and his years as founder and president of the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, which was devoted to helping minorities learn useful, marketable skills.

Relevant to modern times
Revisado: 08-30-22
Booker T Washington gave a thorough philosophy and many anecdotes regarding his school in Alabama. He believed that blacks and whites could work together and not in competition. He was an important leader in education and his words speak to today's struggle towards equality and justice. He also discussed self-reliance and the importance of industrial labor. I found myself very moved by his journey and eloquent speeches.

Historia
The Mill on the Floss is one of the great works of English literature. It is perhaps the most autobiographical of all Eliot's novels. The relationship between its heroine, Maggie Tulliver, and her brother, Tom, closely resembles that of George Eliot and her own brother, Isaac. The subject of sibling affection was clearly a deeply poignant one for George Eliot - she also wrote a series of beautiful and evocative sonnets entitled 'Brother and Sister'.

Captivating and vivid!

Beautiful descriptions of the landscape and deep character reflections. Many twists and turns and definitely a surprise ending! I think there's a lot of metaphor to be found in the Mill itself.
