Why did I wait?

After reading Dr Lance’s “Chamber Divers” and loving it, still I hesitated to read this book about a Confederate submarine. The fact it was Confederate put me, a proud northerner, off by it having anything to do with the South in or before the Civil War. I shouldn’t have, though. Lance tells a thoroughly fascinating scientific and archaeological story mixing the past with the then-present and surrounding it all with all the proper context. I can’t recommend it enough. Don’t hesitate to listen or read this yourself.

Amazing Dive Into the Foundations of Dive Science and WW2 History

An extremely thorough and highly entertaining deep dive into the previously untold history of dive science and of WW2 preparations for underwater operations, and with many hidden figures revealed.

Engaging comedy

Improvement after book 2 and 1

Book 3 is an improvement over Books 2 and 1 largely because this time there’s a plausible villain.

Best one so far

I had “notes” on the first 2 in this series, but they’ve mostly all been taken care of in this one. It’s the strongest of the series so far. It’s full of fun diving action, and I hope the rest of the series continues like this.

Good diving; characters dumb as rocks

The diving parts of this story are very good and entertaining, but I was constantly frustrated by the actions of all the characters, particularly the protagonist, being not at all thought out. In particular, it becomes obvious early on they’re under attack from someone, but do they ever think to tell anyone on the outside who could help, like the police? No. A very frustrating read.

Credulity-snapping pulp nonsense but enjoyable

The politics and procedures in these stories were always suspect but in this one they snap so hard I broke out laughing. “So bad, it’s good” is the phrase that comes to mind.

Exceptional

An exceptionally well written autobiography of an exceptionally talented underwater explorer. She tells it in her own voice, too.

Excellent primer and updater

An excellent book that entertainingly tells the full story of black holes as we know them to date. I thought I knew most of this material already, but there was much I’d either never heard, had forgotten, or has been superseded since I was getting my physics degree.
