Historia
Serj Tankian will be the first to admit that his band, System of a Down, was “unlikely a chart-topper as had ever existed in modern music history: a band of Armenian-Americans playing a practically unclassifiable clash of wildly aggressive metal riffs, unconventional tempo-twisting rhythms, and Armenian folk melodies, with me alternately growling, screaming, and crooning lyrics that could pivot from avant-garde silliness to raging socio-political rants in the space of a single line.” After all, as Serj concedes, “it’s not easy listening.”

Came for a bio, left with a lot of historical understanding
Revisado: 02-28-25
Serj does a great job narrating this bio, speaking mostly about a historical atrocity and the activist life that it inspired, with the stories of his time in the band feeling more on the side. I definitely learned a lot, but I also understand this wasn’t what I expected my first musician autobiography to end up being.

Historia
When Shek Yeung sees a Portuguese sailor slay her husband, a feared pirate, she knows she must act swiftly or die. But as Shek Yeung vies for control over the army she knows she was born to lead, larger threats loom.

An excellently performed tale of a towering figure
Revisado: 10-15-23
My book club chose this as our book for October, and I’m glad they did. Compared to many of our other books, this felt like a comparatively quick read, and like many of our books, detailed a strong female protagonist and the forces she is up against.
The narrator did a great job of embodying the character in all her folly and fury, and was a joy to listen to.
Story wise, it was fun to learn about a person I had only heard of in passing. While pirates are oft romanticized, I really appreciate how this focused more on the way it affected China, as opposed to more European powers.
Personally, I felt the story petered out a little at the end. But overall it was a thoughtful book with some suspense, great narration, and a neat tale to tell.

Interesting look at negotiations between worlds
Revisado: 06-06-23
I really enjoyed how this book focused on the tenseness of negotiation and diplomacy between different interstellar creatures. The intrigue and mystery was fine, though I have mixed feelings about the ending.
The performances were great on their own but it was a little jarring when the VA tried to voice each others characters, it just sounded like they didn’t know what the other character talked like.
Overall though, enjoyed!

Cool to hear the actual story
Revisado: 01-24-23
I’ve only caught bits and pieces of the movie, but hopefully my book club will watch it after. This was quite the whimsical tale of an elder sister finding her own power and self through a series of increasingly more ludicrous happenings. The story was a lot sillier than I thought it would be, but it was nice to see how the characters developed in their bonds with one another. The conversations were fun, there were a number of surprises, and the voice acting was good, with easily distinguishable characters during the conversations. My book club enjoyed this and so did I.

Historia
A collection of stories about the outsiders - the criminals, the soldiers, the addicts, the mathematicians, the gamblers and the cage fighters, the refugees and the rebels. From the battlefield, to alternate realities, to the mean streets of the dark city, we walk in the shoes of those who struggle to survive in a neon-saturated, tech-noir future. Twelve hard-edged stories from the dark, often violent, sometimes strange heart of cyberpunk, this collection - as with all the best science fiction - is an exploration of who were are now.

A memory-bending anthology focused on little explored cultures
Revisado: 12-27-22
I’m not used to hearing stories that focus so much on the countries of Vietnam and Australia, especially ones that talk often of memory wiping, reality warping, and wartime. This anthology had some really neat ideas around the common sci fi things of overly powerful corporations and repressive governments, as well as the ease at which violating a persons own self could occur. But it was the weaving in the locations and cultures I’m so unused to that really made the experience different and I am grateful for it. The narrator did a fine job of presenting different characters, though I admit as I’m unused to accents from the Australian continent I sometimes had trouble making out everything he said. Still, overall it was a thought provoking ride that distinguished itself from the other sci-fi anthologies I’ve heard.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Revisado: 10-25-22
Jennette did a fantastic job with this! It’s an incredibly raw and honest book, and I am so grateful to have had this experience to hear her story and reflect on it. I’m in awe of her courage and determination, and I can’t imagine how difficult it was to read it aloud. But I’m honored she did, and I know I will carry this experience forward the rest of my life.

Fantastic behind the scenes wonderfully told
Revisado: 06-13-22
This is my first behind the scenes book about a movie, and it was such a great experience l! I adored all the voice actors and acting, and all the detail given. There were such colorful personalities well represented and brought to life, and though I honestly haven’t even seen this movie I definitely want to now! Great storytelling that really drew me in, and I loved it!

Nicely spoken source material for many RPGs
Revisado: 06-11-22
The Dresden series has informed a great deal of RPG tropes, characterizations, and plot lines over the years. This was a fun way to learn where so much started, and see just how the magical detective began his career. I thought the story moved quickly, and while there are admittedly choices here that reflect an older sensibility that can make me cringe, overall it was simply a nice detective story with magic atop it. The reading was well done and definitely embodies the character, too!

Incredible insight into a character I barely knew
Revisado: 05-14-22
I’m grateful for this book because it allowed me to see another side to a character I’ve only ever known as an impediment to a certain hero. Elevating this side character to the main one ha given me such a richness that I treasure. Many of the characters are oppressive and cruel, yet we find a few glimpses of light that make it bearable. It’s also empowering when our heroine refuses to give up despite even the divinity themselves setting to quell her.
The narrator is fantastic and I truly hear Circe when she speaks. Her words made the story come alive, and I felt her despair, anger, and triumph.
If you want to learn more about a female side character and understand how much more she is, definitely listen to this!

A detailed, if tough, political journey
Revisado: 04-16-22
The meticulousness with which the author describes the uphill battle our protagonist has to overcome is sometimes very difficult to listen to simply because it seems like one wrong breath sets off enmity. However, it perfectly illustrated how a court can be every bit as complex and deadly as a battlefield, and the story and characters ultimately opened my eyes to a better understanding of such machinations. The narration is great, but word to the wise - it can be easy to get people confused by their names, and even listening at 2x speed it still sounded slower than a lot of other books I’ve heard. Still, very good!
