Historia
As raiders and explorers, the Vikings played a decisive role in the formation of Latin Christendom, and particularly of western Europe. Now, in a series of 36 vivid lectures by an honored teacher and classical scholar, you have the opportunity to understand this remarkable race as never before, studying the Vikings not only as warriors, but in all of the other roles in which they were equally extraordinary - merchants, artists, kings, raiders, seafarers, shipbuilders, and creators of a remarkable literature of myths and sagas.

I was so excited, but...
Revisado: 07-20-17
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
it was not what I expected. I guess you could say that I thought this course would describe the Vikings in their Hollywood glory, but it did not. It was interesting at some points, but very dry at others. If you're trying to get through this series in The Great Courses I would recommend listening to it, just don't expect stories of Thor and Loki!

The Early Middle Ages-the years from A.D. 650 to 1000-were crucial to Europe's future social and political development. These 24 lectures trace a journey from Scandinavia across northern and central Europe to the farthest reaches of the Byzantine and Islamic empires, providing an exciting new look an era often simply called the "Dark Ages."

Keep Listening!
Revisado: 06-08-17
Long distance commuter here. I've listened to probably 500 hours of audiobooks and lectures and have heard a variety of speaking habits and accents. This professor's inflection on some words made it a little difficult for me to get into because it was a bit distracting. However, I pushed through and eventually didn't even hear that anymore.
I recommend listening to this lecture if you are interested in ancient/medieval history and/or watch The Last Kingdom on Netflix! He gives a lot of interesting background around that time period.

I have a Master's in public health so I was already fairly well-versed compared to the average listener. However, I still learned a lot myself and it would be a great overview for someone new and interested in the field!

Historia
In 1518, in a small town in Alsace, Frau Troffea began dancing and didn't stop. She danced until she was carried away six days later, and soon 34 more villagers joined her. Then more. In a month more than 400 people had been stricken by the mysterious dancing plague. In late-19th-century England an eccentric gentleman founded the No Nose Club in his gracious townhome - a social club for those who had lost their noses, and other body parts, to the plague of syphilis for which there was then no cure.

Funny, but...
Revisado: 03-06-17
This book was funny, but I felt like there could have been more plot/story development. There were some pieces that I thought the author should have gone into further depth to give the listener more background and context. However, this was a refreshing and hilarious break from Anne Rice. Recommended to listen to for your commute!

Grew on me!
Revisado: 02-10-17
This book really grew on me after awhile. In the first couple of sections, there are several "boring" details (i.e. Dr So and So wrote to Other Dr, Other Dr wrote back) - as a listener, I found my mind drifting.
However, the last section of the book is phenomenal and super informative.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in medical or American history.

Historia
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.
