Gritty Novel

This book has a gritty film noir feel and quality that Ari Fliakos fully embraces. It is full of flawed and broken characters, including Nick, whose son was brutally murdered. As Nick navigates the current situation in Cain City, which is also flawed and broken, he is confronted by his past. It was tough to listen at times, but depth of the characters, especially Davey, were sometimes a revelation. It is well worth your time to sift through everything this story offers. Ari Fliakos is top notch as the narrator as he brings these characters to life.

The story itself was fairly well done, but the president’s character was too rigid. At points it appeared that the President would give the teams and Israel what they wanted and needed if the next piece of evidence backed the theories that were presented, but that wasn’t how it panned out, she just kept asking for more. It strained credulity and made the character a bit one dimensional. Additionally, the narrator detracted from the story at times. Whether it was stilted narrations, the mispronunciation of words like hummus and the FISA court, the over enunciation of certain words and phrases, or the lack of ability to create unique and believable character voices. Lastly, the abrupt ending in the middle of important events was startling and frankly annoying. I just kept thinking that it would get better and smoother, but it really didn’t. I don’t know that I care enough to buy the next book in the series.

I really enjoy this series and listen with audible. I enjoyed the characters and the story. I always appreciate that the author adds a little historical context in the stories and I enjoy the narrator. He is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

I enjoyed the book, even though you have to suspend reality and I understand why this is not everyone’s cup of tea. I enjoyed Jake’s character and felt it was well developed. What I found most interesting was the author’s interesting dark sense of humor. I think I might have been the only who noticed something in common with some of the bad guys. Did anyone else notice that A.J. Tata used the names of some pretty notorious serial killers’ names. He used Bundy, Dahmer and Chikatilo. I am sure most people recognize the first 2, but Chikatilo was a serial killer in the Soviet Union. I wonder why he did that.

Gregg and Orphan X deliver again

Revisado: 02-16-23

Every year I anticipate books by my favorite authors and Gregg Hurwitz is definitely one of them. I love the Orphan X series and I counted down the days until this book became available. It was definitely worth the wait. All of my favorite characters were represented in this book. From Evan to Joey and from Candy to Tommy Stojack, Scott Brick brings those characters to life and I didn’t want the book to end. This story was deep, rich, and textured and it manipulated all of my emotions in the best possible way. I was surprised at the reoccurrence of Aragon from the last book, but his character actually added to the tapestry in this book and I was so happy that Gregg gave Tommy a moment with Joey that deepened his character, which at times looked like a caricature of a person. It made me love his character even more.

To sum this up, I am giving this book 5 stars and am asking Gregg to not make us wait another year for more X.

I love this series and this story. The character development is outstanding and not just the lead characters. I especially love that there was a cameo by Ian Baldwin and Chip. The authors have taken their time in writing this story and it shows in every word. I just wish they wouldn’t make us wait almost a year for each story and I would love to see another Tier One story as I miss John Dempsey and the gang. How about a Sons of Valor and Tier One combo story. I think I just swooned. And let’s not forget Ray Porter who brings these characters to life with his perfect narration.

Least favorite Elite Sniper book

Revisado: 07-11-21

I have read all 4 of the Elite Sniper books and this one is by far my least favorite. First, my bone to pick with all 4 books. Women are treated in a demeaning way by even the good guys. They don’t respect their abilities and talk down to them. I don’t know how many times I read “baby”, “bitch” or the “c” word. Ok, my review of this book - spoiler alert. The author’s decision to dump Marie pissed me off. She was a badass in the last book in defending her home and family and her character deserved better than to be told her husband was dead. This was Gil’s doing and was cruel. I really wasn’t happy with Gil’s actions in this book at all. They definitely did not match the actions of an honorable Seal. Also, turning Pope into a bad guy was totally out of character for him. I think the authors were trying to find a way to end this series and couldn’t figure out a better way to do it, so they came up with this convoluted and frankly disappointing end to the series.

I read so many of the reviews of the narrator, but I thought I would give it a shot anyway. I couldn’t even get through the first chapter.

The female lead character was well read and performed, but the male character was just terrible. He didn’t have the right inflection or tone and the acting was terrible. His role as a serial killer was laughable and his other character were dull and lackluster.
