Historia
On a summer evening in 1931, Lilly Blackwood glimpses circus lights from the grimy window of her attic bedroom. Lilly isn't allowed to explore the meadows around Blackwood Manor. She's never even ventured beyond her narrow room. Momma insists it's for Lilly's own protection, that people would be afraid if they saw her. But on this unforgettable night, Lilly is taken outside for the first time - and sold to the circus sideshow.

awkward and juvenile
Revisado: 12-07-24
I am really confused by all of the good reviews for this book. I'm not hard to please with books. i really enjoy about 90% of what I read or listen to, but this one was a stinker. If it weren't for some of the language and content, i would've thought this book was written for 10 year olds. the writing style is very juvenile and predictable. the overall story was interesting and had the potential to be really good, but it was clumsily written. the reader wasn't the worst, but just sounded like someone reading a book aloud. it wasn't "performed" like a good audio book should be. save your time and money

Historia
Once upon a time, in the magical land of San Francisco, there lived a not-so-ordinary girl named Laurel Pettigrew. She was supposed to be the Chosen One. The plan was simple: She would vanquish the great evil Tybus in an epic battle. But destiny had other ideas, and Laurel's performance in the whole heroics department was a colossal flop. Now, instead of being a legendary hero, Laurel's the resident pariah of the magic realm. And what’s worse, the dark wizard Tybus swooped in, took over the realm, and forced all supernatural creatures to live under his tyrannical rule.

Sixteen-year-old Talia was born to a life of certainty and luxury, destined to become empress of half the world. But when an ambitious rival seizes power, she and her mother are banished to a nowhere province on the far edge of the Northern Sea. It is here, in the drafty halls of the Ruen-Dahr, that Talia discovers family secrets, a melancholy boy with a troubling vision of her future, and a relic that holds the power of an ancient star. On these shores, the eerie melody of the sea is stronger than ever, revealing long-forgotten tales of the goddess Rahn.

good and not so good
Revisado: 09-30-24
The performance was pretty good, although most of the male character voices sounded the same so it was a bit confusing at times. The story itself was very interesting but I feel like there were some holes. I think a bit more time should have been spent explaining the history of why the Empress and Talia hated each other so much. And the "love story" between Talia and Caden was pointless and unrealistic. I don't want be too specific so as to avoid a spoiler, but it was all "Harlequin Romance-y" (yuck). She was basically instantaneous in love with him, then it fell apart in the blink of an eye, and was basically never mentioned again. But my biggest issue was that Talia was completely unlikable for the majority of the book. She was good in the very beginning, but then she basically turned into an inconsiderate, moody brat until about the last quarter of the book. It was hard to root for her, honestly. And it wasn't an anti-hero type of thing either. I actually love a good anti-hero. But this wasn't that. For example, Wen gave her zero reason to treat him badly, but she was horrible to him for the whole middle of the book. Honestly wanted to smack her. I'm going to give this author one more try as I really enjoyed the story, and I recently listened to Echo North and really liked it, but this book was irritating.

Revisado: 09-23-24
I'm an adult that often enjoys YA books, but not this one. The dialogue was often cheesy and the plot is super far fetched. Maybe if the kids in the story were in their late teens instead of 12/13 it would be more believable.

unique story
Revisado: 07-24-24
mostly a great listen, and I'd still definitely recommend this book, but the reader for the daughter's chapters wasn't great. Many sentences were confusing because she would pause at awkward places in the sentence and sometimes emphasize the wrong words. I had to rewind several times and re-listen to passages to clarify things.

really cool original story, terrible narrator
Revisado: 04-15-24
If you're not opposed to reading this book instead of listening to it, I recommend that option. There is a different narrator for the other 2 in the series, so you can listen to those if you prefer audio books. However, the story is great. It's good enough that I endured the terrible narrator in this one so I could finish it. Not only does she speak in a monotone most of the time, which I would think would eliminate a person from being an audio book narrator, but she ends nearly every sentence in a higher pitch as if every sentence is a question. It's very annoying, but I did get used to it after awhile and stopped noticing it so much. So if your only option is audio, it's still worth it.

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Historia
“Don’t trust their lies. Don’t trust their false peace.” That is the warning that Alanik of the planet ReDawn gave the human pilot Spensa after Alanik’s ship crash-landed on Detritus. While accepting an invitation to meet with her people’s enemy, the Galactic Superiority, Alanik heard Spensa’s cry for help across the vastness of space, and she used her cytonic powers to hyperjump her ship to the source of that cry. What she found there was a shock - a whole planet of free humans fighting against the Superiority. Were they the allies her people desperately needed?

pretty good
Revisado: 10-12-22
I loved to hear part of the story from another point of view. it was great to get to know more of the characters better. But I'm guessing Janci Patterson is a romance writer because some of the scenes between FM and Rig were sooooooo long and drawn out. They were so overdone that the language started getting repetitive and I would've thought the author was being paid by the word! I understand if they didn't want this novella to be too short, but the extra words would have been better spent elsewhere.
