Historia
In 2008, nine mountaineers failed to return from a winter backpacking trip in the New Mexico mountains. At their final campsite, searchers found a bizarre scene: something had appeared at the door of their tent so terrifying that it impelled them to slash their way out and flee barefoot to certain death in a blizzard. Despite a diligent search, only six bodies were found, two violently crushed and inexplicably missing their eyes. The case, given the code name “Dead Mountain” by the FBI, was never solved. Now, two more bodies from the lost expedition are unexpectedly discovered in a cave.

AWFUL Narrator
Revisado: 10-16-23
I have been a long time fan of books co written by Douglas Preson and Lincoln Child. This is a far weaker story than they usually create but the narrator makes it all but impossible to listen to. I would have returned it but then I would not be able to warn others of the truly awful narration. Avoid this narrator every time.

Historia
The story begins in 1629, when the pride of the Dutch East India Company, the Batavia, is on its maiden voyage en route from Amsterdam to the Dutch East Indies, laden down with the greatest treasure to leave Holland. The magnificent ship is already boiling over with a mutinous plot that is just about to break into the open when, just off the coast of Western Australia, it strikes an unseen reef in the middle of the night.

An incredible story-details of vicious oppression
Revisado: 04-30-21
A well read, deeply researched true story. As an audio book there is no map (although you can find the islands on Google Earth) to set the stage for navigation and the hegemonic murders during Jeronimus' rule of the shipwrecked crew and passengers. The privations and accommodations on long sea voyages are described in colourful detail, including rats, weevils and human waste in the bilge, It is a gripping tale but the grisly details of hundreds of murders make parts of it difficult to listen to. The last few chapters are excellent as the threads are drawn together and some humanity emerges. I now almost wish that Peter had written a book about the history of the setllement of Batavia and its transformation as the fortunes of the Dutch East India Company rose and fell. Who knew that clove trees were exterminated on most islands to keep the price cloves high.
The reader is excellent and his handing of the complexities of the Dutch language and characters names is superb.

Shadows of the Jeffrey Epstein story
Revisado: 04-26-20
Another excellent book in the Grey Man series, He is as unstoppable as ever but he gets ever more serious injuries as the story unfolds. The story is about human trafficking and there are many similarities to the mostly untold story of Jeffrey Epstein, a female sidekick who grooms and trains the young women, a ranch in the US, a private island, powerful friends, politically connected, "invests" (and launders) money. After Jeffrey Epstein's "suicide" his full story may never emerge. It is not clear if Mark Greaney was actively mirroring elements of the Epstein story or it is some bizarre parallel evolution.
Unlike the previous novels the hero, Court Gentry, is the narrator and this makes for some confusing passages and scene changes. Maybe not the best literary device, but a good story nonetheless. Excellent narration.

A startling crime with dozens of victims. Appearing out of nowhere to horrify the quiet resort town of Sanibel Island, Florida, dozens of identical, ordinary-looking shoes float in on the tide and are washed up on the tropical beach—each one with a crudely severed human foot inside.

Excellent - Superb mystery, excellent narration
Revisado: 04-13-20
This is book 19 of the Pendergast series, and if you are a fan, read no further, download the book and start enjoying it. Delightfully Constance Greene is back, as mysterious and talented as ever. Agent Coldmoon, returns and provides a superb counterpoint to Pendergast's perfection in suits, shoes and diction. The characters are strong and the narration is as wonderful as that of Scott Brick and Rene Auberjenois. Set in South Florida you will enjoy visiting Sanibel Island and Captiva, quiet corners of the world for the wealthy seeking privacy and calm. The story seems to have been, in part, inspired by the floating shoes (containing feet) off Canada's West Coast. Some talented new characters and as is customary for Preston and Child, you cannot be assured that every character will be spared from harm or death. This device makes the books all the more exciting because indeed, anything can happen. Recommended for Pendergast fans and all those who enjoy a well written and fast paced story filled with surprises.

Good not great
Revisado: 11-08-19
I am a fan of David’s writing and of this series. I am listening to them in order and I found this story dragged a bit at the 7th to 8th hours. The narrator is very talented but I am used to Scott Brick. The narrator has an excellent range and presents accents and different characters successfully. Worth reading but I liked the characters and the way they acted in the first 2 books better.

Historia
The four dead guards didn’t concern Mitch Rapp as much as the absence of the man they’d been paid to protect. Joe Rickman wasn’t just another foot soldier. For the last eight years Rickman had ran the CIA’s clandestine operations in Afghanistan. It was a murky job that involved working with virtually every disreputable figure in the Islamic Republic. More than a quarter billion dollars in cash had passed through Rickman’s hands during his tenure as the master of black ops and no one with a shred of sense wanted to know the details of how that money had been spent.

Another excellent Mitch Rapp adventure
Revisado: 06-15-19
Vince Flynn has an amazing range and he is able to keep the stories fresh and intriguing through the consistent story arc that is found in every book. George Guidall is a fabulous narrator, I am going to have to purchase a print version of Separation of Power because the narrator for that one book in the series, is Ken Kliban, who is simply awful, Separation of Power remains of two books I have "returned" on Audible out of the hundreds I have bought.
Vince Flynn also preserves the story arc between books so that they should be read in sequence, I am never sure why Audible doesn't indicate the sequence in the title as I download the books about 3 at a time and I always have to log into the series to learn which one comes after the one I just read. I recommend Audible consider a title like The Last Man (Book 13).
If you like Mitch Rapp books this is a great one. If you love spy novels and intrigue I recommend the series (except for Separation of Power noted above) and you should start at the first book, American Assassin, a title that sets the tone for the 18 books in the series.

Historia
The four fires in this story are passion, religion, warfare, and fire itself. While there are many more fires that drive the human spirit, love being perhaps the brightest flame of all, it is these four that have moulded us most as Australian people. The four fires give us our sense of place and, for better or for worse, shape our national character.

Revisado: 09-17-18
Bryce is a truly amazing author. This book, like his many others, is about people. A group of people you come to know and love. Humphrey Bower is simply the best narrator I have encountered in the over 400 audio books I have listened to, he has an amazing range. Better even than Scott Brick who is another great narrator. A wonderful book, I’m sorry it is not part of a trilogy as the Potato Factory was. I will miss the characters in this book. It also provides amazing details about various wars and campaigns that involved Australia. Recommended without any reservations.

Second in Harriet Blue Series
Revisado: 08-26-17
Read Black and Blue first. It sets the stage for this powerful book that is set in the "no rules" world of the Australian Outback. Lots of interesting twists and turns. A well written and well performed book, but be aware that the narrator, quite correctly, narrates this book in her native Australian accent. I am looking forward to the third Harriet Blue book.
