As always with Connelly the story flows smoothly with excellent attention to details. Uncommon in the genre the vie from the perpetrator’s side is limited, which I like. The only negative, and a small one, is that sometimes the story wonders around for a while. Overall, a great crime-thriller tale, with an excellent performance.

Not outstanding, not bad. I thought that this book represents good, basic entertainment. The story jumps around a bit, the characters act predictably, with a couple of exceptions that are well managed. I would recommend it for a summer read, not much more.

Nice plot with good suspense, great background description. The only problem is in a character that despite being very smart survives by pure dumb luck, too many times. I will have a hard time getting another one of these books.

Good at first but disappointing in the end

The first book of the Cordell Logan series was great, unusually good humor, restrained and believable violence, interesting characters. Then, the second disappointed a bit with a story too close to the first one and a bit rushed but showed promise nonetheless so I was eager to get to the third in the series. There was the return of Ray Porter as icing on the cake. The story starts with a great setting, evolves in a procedural novel with an intense investigation that kept me listening in my car after arriving home. Then the story starts to drag, the auxiliary characters are flat, the story meanders without clear direction, but I still had hope. Then, close to the end, came the big let down. Difficult to explain without spoilers so let me just say that I do not like when the author keeps telling us how smart a character is while he/she is acting plain dumb. It made me question if Logan was ever a member of the Alpha team or a pretender much lower in the Greek alphabet. I am in doubt now if I should give Mr. Freed another chance. Perhaps a return to Silva, Lee Child, or Flynn.

Almost too close to current events

Typical of Daniel Silva, this book is detailed, well researched, with good character development - particularly that of a new recruit and its transformation - and overall a compelling story. Some of the events in the book reminded me of the way I felt after reading Tom Clancy's Debt of Honor, when fiction gets a bit too close to reality. Not a bad thing in itself, but slightly uncomfortable anyway. Also worth mentioning is that the author wasn't in a hurry to the end the book, something all too common in the action genre, and closed almost every loop. Some were left open, undoubtedly as hooks for future work.
In summary, I would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in a fictional narrative that mimics the struggles and associated violence that frequently shows up on the evening news. A final word about the narrator, George Guidall: he is excellent as always.

This is a good book if you like Cussler's style

It is unfair to criticize a book because one doesn't like the author's style, but different people have different tastes. I will readily admit that this could be a good book for someone else, but it was not for me. On the contrary, I had a hard time finishing it. The background of the story is very well researched, as usual by this author, and the details regarding vehicles, customs and locales are excellent. The descriptions of events in San Francisco are fascinating. But then, there is the story. I just can't fathom why such a good backdrop had to be spoiled by this turn of the century super hero surrounded by beautiful ladies fighting a horrible bad guy while accomplishing incredible feats. The performer did a good job but added to the Sunday matinee effect. Sorry Mr. Cussler, I tried. I just wish you would use your historical research genius to produce a more serious work one day. I will buy it.

If you like Reacher, skip this one

Other reviewers have done such a good job analyzing this book that there is not much that I can add. Still, I would like to touch on a few of the low points, mainly to vent my frustration and, maybe, save someone else from the same fate.

First, the narration: it is just painful to listen. The usually excellent Dick Hill overacts Reacher's broken nose to a ridiculous level. Moving into something more serious, the story. It has so many holes that is not worth commenting. The usual 'suspense of disbelief' is stretched to the braking point, Finally, the action scenes. There are few of them but they are, well, oh so Child-ish. (Sorry, I couldn't help it.) I would advice Mr. Child to get some advice on guns and CQC before making Reacher channel his inner Mitch Rapp in another book.

In summary, I have read several of the other books in the Reacher series and I will read more (yes, I am a sucker) but this one is by far the worst of Lee Child's production. Save yourself time and money and move to the next one in your list.

This is a difficult review to make, as I have to disagree with most other reviewers. Like the majority of readers/listeners I found in this book some great material but there are flaws that I just couldn't ignore.
This work is typical of the genre, action packed and with a captivating story. It explores how the energy industry is vital to our lifestyle and how a determined and capable group of terrorists can wreak havoc in it. The reaction of functionaries in the different government agencies that are involved – and there are many - is particularly well described and in quite believable terms, although not always in a positive light. Following the bloody money trail leads to ably descriptions of the internal work of financial institutions. The result is scary. The hero is complex and likable, too close to a super-hero for my taste, while the bad guys are, well, very-very bad.
However, I had issues with this book. While it is accepted that in this type of fiction the reader has to suspend disbelief, there are limits. The plot holes, technical mistakes and absurd exaggerations are too many to ignore. From the description of the oil field platform and its work conditions to international air travelers with no luggage and carrying weapons it all turns a bit cartoonish. Towards the end it was so distracting that I just didn’t care any more about the story or the characters. It is unfortunate that the editors didn’t help the author with a reality check.
The narrator, although not my favorite, does a fine job with the material. My only minor complaint is with the exciting passages that are a bit overemphasized. On the plus side, his inflections and voice tone make it easy to determine who is talking at all times.
In summary, I see a lot of potential in Ben Coes but I will wait some time before reading another book from him to see how he evolves. Meanwhile, I will keep searching for authors that continue the tradition of the likes of Vince Flynn and Tom Clancy.
