Disappointing, with occasional good advice.
Revisado: 12-15-24
The book is read well, but the advice given seems dated. Basically, the author wants people to deceitfully align themselves with the views of the person who they are trying to make fall in love with you. Most decent people will be turned off by much of the advice. Nonetheless, the book now and then offers helpful advice, particularly regarding sexual compatibility. But, overall, like some other books on similar topics, it is longer than it needs to be, it is dated, and it offers mixed advice.

A Missed Opportunity
Revisado: 07-12-24
The best part of this book was the narrator, who was one of the best I have heard on Audible. Her voice was clear, articulate, and very soothing.
Unfortunately, we live at a time where some historians try to subtly impose their worldview on their facts to promote their ideology. There is nothing wrong with an historian holding personal views, but they should let the historical facts fall where they may without filtering them to promote a personal prejudice, whatever it may be.
The book itself seemed fairly mundane as to ancient Thai history. It was only with the 1950s forward that the author’s strong ideological bent infused the remainder of the book with his personal leftist views and his analyses became suspect. If you are interested in modern Thai politics, and you believe history should tell a story of what happened without promoting a political ideology, you might want to skip this book.
I found the author very bright and a good writer, but at times it was just too difficult to separate fact from fiction, something that should not happen in a book of this sort.

Historia
The Mexican War introduced vast new territories into the United States, among them California and the present-day Southwest. When gold was discovered in California in the great Gold Rush of 1849, the population swelled, and settlers petitioned for admission to the Union. But the U.S. Senate was precariously balanced with 15 free states and 15 slave states. Up to this point, states had been admitted in pairs, one free and one slave, to preserve that tenuous balance in the Senate.

This is one of the best books I’ve read on slavery and its many attempts to address the issue leading up to the Civil War. The good moves quickly, without sacrificing details, and forms a logical, accessible narrative.

Historia
Stefan Zweig's memoir, The World of Yesterday, recalls the golden age of prewar Europe - its seeming permanence, its promise and its devastating fall with the onset of two world wars. Zweig's passionate, evocative prose paints a stunning portrait of an era that danced brilliantly on the brink of extinction. It is an unusually humane account of Europe from the closing years of the 19th century through to World War II, seen through the eyes of one of the most famous writers of his era.

Beautifully written

Stefan Zweig wrote so clearly that I suspect that if had written a commentary on the telephone book, it would make for fascinating reading.
The World of Yesterday evokes the decades leading up to World War II in Europe, most notably in Austria, as ones of high culture and good relations among its people. That all changed with the rise of Hitler and the Nazis.

Historia
In this bold examination of the Israeli-American relationship, Walter Russell Mead demolishes the myths that both pro-Zionists and anti-Zionists have fostered over the years. He makes clear that Zionism has always been a divisive subject in the American Jewish community, and that American Christians have often been the most fervent supporters of a Jewish state, citing examples from the time of J. P. Morgan and John D. Rockefeller to the present day.

Outstanding, balanced view of the Mideast
Revisado: 02-18-24
This monumental book presents a highly thoughtful, beautifully written and narrated, fair, and relevant historical discussion of America’s sometimes tortured relationship with one its most important allies. Along the way are insightful analyses of American politics and the forces that influence (or, in some cases don’t influence) the decision making process from before the birth of Israel to the present. His non-polemical, nuanced approach and respect toward all parties to the conflict makes this a very valuable contribution to understanding the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestinians.

Historia
Prize-winning historian and biographer, Carolly Erickson has created an eminently readable biography that recognizes the humanity of Great Catherine—Empress of Russia—with her majesty and immense capability. Dispelling some of the myths surrounding her voracious sexual appetite, the biographer portrays Catherine as a lonely woman far ahead of her time—achieving greatness in an era when women were executed on a husband’s whim.

Historia
Milton Friedman was, alongside John Maynard Keynes, the most influential economist of the twentieth century. His work was instrumental in the turn toward free markets that defined the 1980s, and his full-throated defenses of capitalism and freedom resonated with audiences around the world. It’s no wonder the last decades of the twentieth century have been called “the Age of Friedman”—or that analysts have sought to hold him responsible for both the rising prosperity and the social ills of recent times. Historian Jennifer Burns tells Friedman’s extraordinary story with the nuance it deserves.

Well Done, But Still A Little Disappointed
Revisado: 11-29-23
Perhaps I was expecting more of a traditional biography of Milton Friedman, the person. Instead, this is a somewhat dry, though well-researched and well-written, biography of Milton Friedman, the economist and monetarist, whose theories became influential in the Reagan years and beyond.
Having been raised in Chicago, and having even attended a Milton Friedman lecture, and having spent a bit of time with his son, David, I was looking forward to learning more about Milton Friedman’s life outside of his profession. While Burns packs in a lot of solid information, she focuses on his work, his accomplishments, his economic theories, and his interactions with politicians and other economists: All worthy topics but maybe less appealing by themselves to a wider audience.

Today, the US Constitution is the oldest, continually-operating instrument of government in the world. But to think of the Constitution as a fully-formed, canonical document is to miss out on an honest, well-rounded grasp of American history. Now, more than ever, any well-informed citizen should understand how the Constitution lives, breathes, and endures.

You think you know about Islam. But, did you know that Islam teaches that Muslims must wage war to impose Islamic law on non-Muslim states, or that American Muslim groups are engaged in a huge cover-up of Islamic doctrine? These and other "politically incorrect" facts are revealed by Robert Spencer in The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades).

When the Civil War broke out, Clara Barton wanted more than anything to be a Union soldier, an impossible dream for a 39-year-old woman who stood a slender five feet tall. Determined to serve, she became a veritable soldier, a nurse, and a one-woman relief agency operating in the heart of the conflict. Now, award-winning author Stephen B. Oates, drawing on archival materials not used by her previous biographers, has written the first complete account of Clara Barton's active engagement in the Civil War.
