Was not thrilled by the pacing and pov switches. I felt the protagonist's decision-making process was contrvied and unbelievable.

Historia
Sometimes things don't work out exactly as planned. The Mesan Alignment has a plan - one it's been working on for centuries. A plan to remake the galaxy and genetically improve the human race - its way. Until recently things have gone pretty much as scheduled, but then the Alignment hit a minor bump in the road called the Star Empire of Manticore. So the Alignment engineered a war between the Solarian League, the biggest and most formidable interstellar power in human history.

Mr Weber needs an editor. Badly
Revisado: 12-05-17
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Le Sigh. I felt compelled to listen to this. I had read all the others in the various Honorverse series'. It was too long, too complicated and in the end it had too few space battles and too much politics.
This novel and it's predecessor are kind of like what The Simpson's parodied in the "Co-Dependent's Day" with politics in Star Wars.
What about Kevin T. Collins’s performance did you like?
A narrator can only do so much with the content he's given. The constant swiches to Polish or Czech were really disjointing.
Do you think Shadow of Victory needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Oh it will get a follow-up book all right. Whether or not it will be any better stronly depends on whether the folks a Baen have the gumption to force an editor on Weber or not.
Any additional comments?
I have been reading Weber's Honnorverse novels since I was 13 years old. I loved the early books. Weber shines when he writes actual combat and strategic situations. The problem is he has gotten lost in expanding his universe. The proliferation of Point of view characters leaves you lost with out a cast list to refer to.

Historia
In the more shadowy corners of the world, frequented by angels and demons and everything in between, Laytham Ballard is a legend. It's said he raised the dead at the age of 10, stole the Philosopher's Stone in Vegas back in 1999, and survived the bloodsucking kiss of the Mosquito Queen. Wise in the hidden ways of the night, he's also a cynical bastard who stopped thinking of himself as the good guy a long time ago.

Too much pessimism and southern drawl.
Revisado: 12-05-17
What was most disappointing about R. S. Belcher’s story?
I was not able to finish this novel. It's in the "Everything is going to hell" school of urban fantasy and the constant pessimism, self recrimination and backstabbing was just too much. I bought the book to keep me awake on a long road trip but I only ended up being annoyed with the foolish decisions the protagonist kept making. It was kind of like watching a bad 90's horror movie where the characters keep making such dumb choices that you start to root for the monster.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Bronson Pinchot?
Bronson was OK... but his dedication to the southern accent was too much for me.
Any additional comments?
IF you like the really noir urban fantasy books then this might be for you.

Historia
FBI Special Agent Matthew Roarke is closing in on a bust of a major criminal organization in San Francisco when he witnesses an undercover member of his team killed right in front of him on a busy street, an accident Roarke can't believe is coincidental. His suspicions put him on the trail of a mysterious young woman who appears to have been present at each scene of a years-long string of accidents and murders, and who may well be that most rare of killers: a female serial.

Moira Quirk's performance deserves a sixth star.
Revisado: 07-05-17
The story wasn't quite as good as Rook - I found some of the viewpoint and timeline jumps jarring. The humor or the Rook was still there and the author's use of conversational exposition over info-dumps is appreciated.
Moira Quirk made the experience. Her ability to give each character their own voice and her consistency in delivery made the experience immersive. I particularly appreciated her ability to deliver the many oneliners and throwaway asides without breaking stride.

Reservation "bad boy" Thomas Begay is found dead drunk under the La Plata Bridge, which is not unusual for him. What is unusual, however, is that beautiful BIA investigator Patsy Greyhorse is found lying beside him, not drunk or even a Navajo but very dead nonetheless. Charlie Yazzie, fresh from law school, risks his career and even his life to help his old friend. The answer seems to lie with the Yeenaaldiooshii...should one choose to believe in such things.

I read and listened to this last Discworld novel with a heavy heart. I read my first Discworld novel and 13 and have been enthralled for the last 20 years. In spite of his health challenges he continued to produce and The Shepherds crown is a fitting swan-song to an incredible career.

Historia
Centuries ago the human race fought its first great war against an alien race - and lost. A tiny population of human beings fled to distant Safehold. Centuries later their descendants have forgotten their history; for them, life has been an eternal Middle Ages, ruled by the Church of God Awaiting, whose secret purpose is to prevent the reemergence of industrial civilization. But not all of Safehold's founders were onboard with this plan. Those dissidents left behind their own secret legacies.

David Weber: King of the info-dump.
Revisado: 01-03-16
Any additional comments?
The action, when he writes it, is great but Weber is a little too fond of conference room info-dump and is clearly fascinated by the logistics of his war. Still, it's worth the listen
