For the narrator... it is more properly LOO-ard and WINN-ard, NOT LEE-ward and WIND-ward. Terms with which any sailor is familiar. Minor complaints but they really stand out. Stories are on the bland side.

Historia
Detective Hercule Poirot is urged out of retirement to solve the murder of Roger Ackroyd, a wealthy widower found stabbed in his study. In the deceptively quiet village of King’s Abbot, potential motives abound - involving blackmail, revenge, legacies, and more - but they are hard to recognize amid so many layers of secrecy and misdirection...or they would be, for anyone but Poirot. Who’s hiding what, and which was the secret that ultimately provoked the crime? You can’t possibly imagine.

Sorry but not impressed
Revisado: 07-10-22
Characters were a bit interesting, story was OK, narration was pretty bland. No I did not think the ending was such a great twist. First Christie book I’ve ever read and do not feel inclined to seek others. Goes against popular opinion l know; not a Hemingway fan either. Happily concede it’s just me.

Historia
Gifted storyteller Winston Groom, the best-selling author of Forrest Gump, has written the fascinating story of three extraordinary heroes who defined aviation during the great age of flight: Charles Lindbergh, Eddie Rickenbacker, and Jimmy Doolittle. These cleverly interwoven tales of their heart-stopping adventures take us from the feats of World War I through the heroism of World War II and beyond, including daring military raids and survival at sea, and will appeal to fans of Unbroken, The Greatest Generation, and Flyboys.

Groom states that Lindbergh stepped out onto the wing of the Spirit of St Louis in Paris ???
The Spirit of St Louis is a high wing plane! I would like to have seen him do this.

Historia
When wealthy and popular crusader and reformer Lester Pierce is gunned down in front of his Park Avenue residence, the public outcry forces the NYPD to restructure its homicide department. As the deceased was highly critical of Inspector Lionel Cramer, the longtime head of homicide is temporarily relieved of his badge. But it seems Cramer was not just a scapegoat. He was seen dining in Little Italy with mob kingpin Ralph Mars. If Cramer's provisional replacement, Captain George Rowcliff, becomes permanent, PI Nero Wolfe's future dealings with the force will be much compromised.

Too much rehashing
Revisado: 09-02-21
Decent story but the conversations between Archie and Lily, Saul and Lon are too long and too smarmy by at least half.
Presumably Wolfe/Stout aficionados are reading these and the explanation of their backgrounds is cloying. Ganser does not do all that well in distinguishing characters, much like Michael Prichard. I have to wonder what Ray Porter would do with these, and the Stout, stories. As others have said, better to re-read the originals.

Historia
Leonard Dyke's writing style didn't offend. But all of his work featured unhappy endings: murders. When four people die, including the author, police finally call on Nero Wolfe. Wolfe baits a trap, and when it springs shut, he finds that truth is stranger (and bloodier) than fiction.

Not my Nero
Revisado: 12-30-19
I take nothing away from Mr. Prichard since other reviewers seem to like him but for me he is nowhere near either the Archie or Nero of my imagination. I find his narration quite flat with very little differentiation between characters and not much personality for the women. The story of course is good, how can you go wrong with Rex Stout. Perhaps it's just me, I have never warmed up to Hemingway either, but I don't plan to buy any more Wolfe books by this narrator.

Not his best
Revisado: 11-16-18
I have both this collection and the one narrated by Charlton Griffin, I have to give the nod to Mr. Griffin's version. It is first of all a more complete work including all the stories. Stephen Fry is one of my favorites, especially his version of THE HITCHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAY. However here Mr. Fry just doesn't seem to me to provide as much feeling to the characters as does Mr. Griffin. His editorial comments are quite good and do add to his interpretation but distract somewhat from the flow of the stories. I can with a clear conscience recommend either version but would direct listeners to the Charlton Griffin version for the more complete experience.

Historia
On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you’ll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder. Presented by Stephen Fry, this series delves deep into a period of time we think we know, to discover an altogether darker reality. The stories we’re told offer a different perspective on an era which underwent massive social change. As education, trade, technology and culture blossomed, why was there an undercurrent of the ‘forbidden’ festering beneath Victorian society?

Entertaining
Revisado: 11-16-18
While this production is undoubtedly entertaining it is at the same time rather annoying. The almost constant piano background music becomes cloying, not to mention distracting, rather quickly. The various supporting "experts" giving opinions are not up to the quality of Mr. Fry's work. The entire production seems to try a bit too hard to be "cute". Still I would recommend it for the interesting stories.

Historia
It was the winter of 1902; South African park ranger Harry Wolhuter was on horseback, patrolling the area for poachers at Kruger National Park. Little did he know, he was also being stalked. Out of nowhere, two huge male lions pounced on Harry's horse, knocking the man to the ground. The horse ran off, leaving Harry to fend for himself. One of the lions lunged at him - piercing deep into his flesh and bones - and began to drag him far into the jungle to finish him off.

Not what was expected
Revisado: 03-30-18
What disappointed you about The Man-Eaters of Eden?
Perhaps its me but I was expecting stories about incidents in Kruger of man versus wildlife. What was presented was a cataloging in a "hand-wringing & finger pointing" way about refugees from Mozambique trying to cross the park and getting killed by lions. Frump claims this is a journalistic search for the truth, of which he often reminds the reader, but most of the statistics cited are without reference.
What could Robert Frump have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Maybe a different title pointing to a refugee problem, now it just seems like a long newspaper article.
Did John Skinner do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
No, there was no differentiation. Which is not a critique, none was needed. There is only one speaker. Skinner has a good strong voice but he is not the equal of Robertson Dean or Scott Brick
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Not for me.
Any additional comments?
The situation is indeed a horrible problem, but merely illuminating it without suggestions on how to help solve it was disappointing.

Historia
Drawing on previously unpublished eyewitness accounts, prizewinning historian Donald L. Miller has written what critics are calling one of the most powerful accounts of warfare ever published. Here are the horror and heroism of World War II in the words of the men who fought it, the journalists who covered it, and the civilians who were caught in its fury. Miller gives us an up-close, deeply personal view of a war that was more savagely fought - and whose outcome was in greater doubt - than one might imagine. This is the war that Americans on the home front would have read about had they had access to previously censored testimony.

Great overview of WWII
What did you like best about this story?
The personal accounts included.

Never in my entire life have I EVER heard it pronounced "ta-RAW-wa". Its always been
"TARE-ah-wah". Admittedly a very minor point but I found it very grating to hear. Beyond that I rather liked the narrator.
