Historia
Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

Painful Rendering
Revisado: 02-26-25
Painful portrayals in that all the characters sound essentially the same. It’s awful. Couldn’t finish it. Just too good a story to be ruined in this way. Of course, he nailed Gollum.

Cultivating New Interests in History
Revisado: 08-21-22
A wonderfully insightful view of the everyday comings and goings of the average person through Western history. No doubt Garland could have extended this another 48 lectures. No need though, as it spurs one towards discovering additional resources to supplement and/or expand on his instruction. Very enjoyable.

Historia
Ancient Egyptian civilization is so grand our minds sometimes have difficulty adjusting to it. It lasted 3,000 years, longer than any other on the planet. Its Great Pyramid of Cheops was the tallest building in the world until well into the 19th century and remains the only Ancient Wonder still standing. And it was the most technologically advanced of the ancient civilizations, with the medical knowledge that made Egyptian physicians the most famous in the world.

Historia
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

A good introduction to Norse mythology that slowly and steadily unfolds into a gripping and compelling final chapter. Short enough to be listened to a few times over and so providing the listener with a mature comprehension of this telling.

Historia
Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school...again. No matter how hard he tries, he can't seem to stay out of trouble. But can he really be expected to stand by and watch while a bully picks on his scrawny best friend? Or not defend himself against his pre-algebra teacher when she turns into a monster and tries to kill him? Of course, no one believes Percy about the monster incident; he's not even sure he believes himself.

If you enjoy Greek mythology …
Revisado: 06-19-21
If you enjoy Greek mythology you may find this an enjoyable, but frustratingly painful listening experience. Riordan strayed far from the foundational elements of Greek mythology, but he incorporated many wonderfully inventive and entertaining tie-ins. (Stephen Fry commented on the value of this series in his well-regarded Mythos, which is worth a read/listen.)
Rowling dedicated her works toward the establishment of good and proper moral compass in key characters (and the audience), but Riordan missed the mark completely. It was an easy target and he missed it. Greek mythology is complicated, but there are many morally suitable narratives written for children that have proven capable of achieving a balance of the key underlying storylines while tastefully dealing with adult themes (please see the works by Roger Lancelyn Green).
Perhaps most frustrating, the narrator re-used the same three voices for all the characters. His performance also reflected a lack of understanding of basic sentence structure, which is unfair to Riordan.
If you are considering this for children, please first introduce them to Greek mythology through D’auliere or Green. My kids (7,7,9) could compare/contrast Riordan’s approach with the classic storylines in a rather informed matter. It would be a shame for a child’s foundational understanding of Greek mythology to originate with Riordan.

The famous D-Day landings of 6 June, 1944, marked the beginning of Operation Overlord, the battle for the liberation of Europe. Republished as part of the Pan Military Classics series, Max Hastings’ acclaimed account overturns many traditional legends in this memorable study. Drawing together the eyewitness accounts of survivors from both sides, plus a wealth of previously untapped sources and documents, Overlord provides a brilliant, controversial perspective on the devastating battle.

A Vivid Image of War
Revisado: 08-26-20
An excellent job relaying a vivid picture of war from the perspective of so many different people who experienced it first hand. Disappointing narration. The attempt of mimicking American accents was poorly done. I think it would be better to simply read the words and let the audience translate into a respective accents.

How to Rear Children that Stop Listening
Revisado: 11-21-19
Disappointing overall. Too much of the book is conjecture. I preferred the books written by Dr. Siegel and Dr. Bryson (The Whole Brain Child) because they substantiate theories with scientific research (as opposed to “research” that consists of a few letters they received from a small population segment).
Finally, the narrator’s illustrations of parent-child communications often sounded condescending and / or demeaning. I find that children and adults alike tune me out when I speak in such a manner. When that happens, the message falls on deaf ears and the value of the message is lost.

I love history and music, but I know so very little about both. In fact, the more I learn, the less I know. Greenberg does a fabulous job making it deeply insightful. A bit zany, but he really grows on you. Looking forward to hearing more and more from him.

Great lessons and insight. Dr. Siegel’s message is a tremendous help to me in the way I relate to myself, my spouse, my parents, and, most importantly of all, my young children. Employ Mindsight and break the dangerous inter-generational cycles.
