Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

Superbly written, superbly researched

Loved this from start to finished. Excellent narration by John Lee of an unbelievable and inspiring true story that is expertly assembled by Larson. There were several times when I would get home and just sit in my driveway listening in the idling car because I couldn’t stand to cut it off during a suspenseful crescendo.

Historia
In The Knife Man, Wendy Moore unveils John Hunter's murky and macabre world - a world characterized by public hangings, secret expeditions to dank churchyards, and gruesome human dissections in pungent attic rooms. This is a fascinating portrait of a remarkable pioneer and his determined struggle to haul surgery out of the realms of meaningless superstitious ritual and into the dawn of modern medicine.

Fantastically entertaining and well researched

Wonderfully written and never a dull moment. A superbly crafted biography of a lowland farm-boy rising well above his ranks to become a pioneering giant in medicine, whose advances almost singularly brought surgery out of the shadows and firmly into the high sciences. Expertly read and performed with deft attention to subtleties of accents. Highly recommend.

Historia
If anyone could be considered a Russian counterpart to the infamous British double-agent Kim Philby, it was Oleg Gordievsky. The son of two KGB agents and the product of the best Soviet institutions, the savvy, sophisticated Gordievsky grew to see his nation's communism as both criminal and philistine. He took his first posting for Russian intelligence in 1968 and eventually became the Soviet Union's top man in London, but from 1973 on he was secretly working for MI6.

Exceptionally entertaining and well-structured

I listened to this true story during a cross-country road trip and didn’t want to pull over to rest because it was so riveting and gripping. This is my forth Ben McIntyre book, but first audiobook experience with the author’s work, and I can’t believe I had not done it before. His books are always fantastically entertaining and marvelously researched, and I think that, and this is saying a lot, this is my favorite one yet! Highly recommended.
