Historia
The Pillow Book of Sei Shōnagon is a fascinating, detailed account of Japanese court life in the closing years of the 10th century. Written by a lady of the court at the height of Heian culture, this book enthrals with its lively gossip, witty observations and subtle impressions. Lady Shōnagon was an erstwhile rival of Lady Murasaki, whose novel, The Tale of Genji, fictionalized the elite world Lady Shōnagon so eloquently relates.

Perfect to listen to at bedtime or the middle of the night. Beautiful images. One must make allowances for her station and time period, but overall it is exquisite.

Historia
Stella Lane thinks math is the only thing that unites the universe. She comes up with algorithms to predict customer purchases - a job that has given her more money than she knows what to do with as well as way less experience in the dating department than the average 30-year-old. It doesn't help that she has Asperger's and that French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish. She decides that she needs lots of practice - with a professional - which is why she hires escort Michael Phan.

Charming story, interesting characters. Satisfying romance. Is autism an illness or a way of being?

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Compelling and adventuresome

I work in science, but I’m not an engineer. Besides a gripping story of survival there’s lots of science and math to keep the other half of your brain occupied. 2 Thumbs Way up!

Historia
Maternal instinct - the all-consuming, utterly selfless love that mothers lavish on their children - has long been assumed to be an innate, indeed defining element of a woman's nature. But is it? In this provocative, groundbreaking audiobook, renowned anthropologist (and mother) Sarah Blaffer Hrdy shares a radical new vision of motherhood and its crucial role in human evolution. Hrdy strips away stereotypes and gender-biased myths to demonstrate that traditional views of maternal behavior are essentially wishful thinking codified as objective observation.

Love this book. However, I found the narration excruciatingly flat. Could barely concentrate on the material & ended up switching to reading a hard copy.

Historia
Cat Warren is a university professor and former journalist with an admittedly odd hobby: She and her German shepherd have spent the last seven years searching for the dead. Solo is a cadaver dog. What started as a way to harness Solo’s unruly energy and enthusiasm soon became a calling that introduced Warren to the hidden and fascinating universe of working dogs, their handlers, and their trainers.

A cadaver dog?
Revisado: 04-02-15
Very interesting discussion of how college professor who loves dogs came to find an appropriate avocation for her high strung Singleton German Shepherd with very poor social skills. I always wondered how people came to do this kind of volunteer work. I love dogs myself, but never considered the possibility of turning one of my dogs into a working dog. Her discussion of the rigor of this work is inspiring.

Nice story, interesting characters
Revisado: 08-04-13
Would you try another book from Victor Methos and/or Marilyn Ghigliotti?
Yes. I enjoyed the story once I decided not to dwell on medical inaccuracies.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Mispronounciations ("filling" from the plane instead of "filing" from the plane). Inconsistent Aussie accent. Were the lesions "pustules" or "papules"?
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
I would see the movie if it had one of my favorite actors.
Any additional comments?
The author should listen to his medical advisor more closely. Have the advisor listen to the audio script as well.
