Historia
When two Union soldiers stumble onto a plantation in northern Georgia on a warm May day in 1864, the last thing they expect is to see the Union flag flying high - or to be greeted by a group of freed slaves and their Jewish mistress. Little do they know that this place has an unusual history. Twelve years prior, Adelaide Mannheim - daughter of Mordecai, the only Jewish planter in the county - was given her own maid, a young slave named Rachel. The two became friends, and soon they discovered a secret.

Too much of a romance novel!
Revisado: 04-28-22
I love Bahni Turpin as a narrator but this book graphically describes the details of sexual intimacy in great detail at least twice, probably more, but I only got to chapter 5 before I decided to stop listening. I personally feel the graphic details could have easily been left out and this would have been a great story. It's almost like the author take a detour from the main story of the book to a sex scene out of a romance novel and then comes back again. I did not expect to hear this type of content from the book description so it's frustrating to have wasted a credit for book. It was also kind of slow. Too bad because I really wanted to kike this book.

Raymond Jaffe feels like he doesn’t belong. Not with his mother’s new family. Not as a weekend guest with his father and his father’s wife. Not at school, where he’s an outcast. After his best friend moves away, Raymond has only two real connections: to the feral cat he’s tamed and to a blind ninety-two-year-old woman in his building who’s introduced herself with a curious question: Have you seen Luis Velez?

Good, but social issues front & center 👍👎
Revisado: 04-13-22
I wasn't going to use a credit on this book due to some of the reviews I had read but it was on the list for my book club so I decided to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked the story but was also able to see why some people didn't like it as much due to the one sided presentation of so many cultural social issues. The narration is painfully slow if you listen to it at regular speed but was fine a 1.50x the speed. Overall it was worth the credit.

Historia
A powerful, moving memoir - and a practical guide to healing - written by Dr. Edith Eva Eger, an eminent psychologist whose own experiences as a Holocaust survivor help her treat patients and allow them to escape the prisons of their own minds. The Choice weaves Eger's personal story with case studies from her work as a psychologist. Her patients and their stories illustrate different phases of healing and show how people can choose to escape the prisons they construct in their minds and find freedom, regardless of circumstance.

Revisado: 03-21-22
This book has been a life changer for me! Anyone who has ever suffered, which is everyone, should listen to this book. I wish I could meet Edith in person and give her a big hug! What a blessing her story and amazing words of encouragement have been to the lives of so many. The narrator was the best I have ever heard. Real emotion in her voice! Absolutely wonderful!

Historia
Ten-year-old Pearl Spence is a daydreamer, playing make-believe to escape life in Oklahoma's Dust Bowl in 1935. The Spences have their share of misfortune, but as the sheriff's family, they've got more than most in this dry, desolate place. They're who the town turns to when there's a crisis or a need. Pearl is proud of her loving, strong family, though she often wearies of tracking down her mentally impaired older sister or wrestling with her grandmother's unshakable belief in a God. Then a mysterious man bent on revenge tramps into her town of Red River.

Great narration of a good story!
Revisado: 02-05-22
The narrator did a very good job of making each character sound unique and identifiable. She put emotion where there needed to be emotion and just did a great job overall. The story was a bit predictable but still a nice little story that seemed realistic for Dust Bowl times.

Historia
If anyone could be considered a Russian counterpart to the infamous British double-agent Kim Philby, it was Oleg Gordievsky. The son of two KGB agents and the product of the best Soviet institutions, the savvy, sophisticated Gordievsky grew to see his nation's communism as both criminal and philistine. He took his first posting for Russian intelligence in 1968 and eventually became the Soviet Union's top man in London, but from 1973 on he was secretly working for MI6.

Starts out super slow
Revisado: 09-30-21
While this story is interesting and the narrator did a decent job, it took FOREVER for it to get to the part that pulled me in- it wasn't until the last maybe 1.5 hours that it got good. I'd say 85% of the book is just a list of facts and events. To me it was just mostly boring and kind of depressing until the very end. I would have preferred it to be told in more of a narration/story format. Lots of people have given this book great reviews. I think the guy the book is about is pretty darn amazing and also quite interesting but this book just didn't do it for me like it did for so many others, unfortunately.

Excellent story and excellent narration!
Revisado: 09-04-21
The narrator did a wonderful job making each character unique and his voice was so easy to listen to! The fantasy genre is not usually my first choice- I listened to this and Strange the Dreamer for book club and I absolutely loved both so much so that now I want to read more fantasy books! I couldn't put this series down and am really hoping the author writes another book to follow up with what she hinted to at the end of Muse of Nightmares! please write another 😀

Historia
>When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of "rogue" wild elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, his common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance of survival: they would be killed if he wouldn't take them. In order to save their lives, Anthony took them in. In the years that followed he became a part of their family. And as he battled to create a bond with the elephants, he came to realize that they had a great deal to teach him about life, loyalty, and freedom.
