Historia
Millions of people–looking to cheat on their partners–signed up for Ashley Madison in the early 2000s, seeking a private space to share their public desires. The promise of discretion was shattered in the summer of 2015, when anonymous hackers stole the company’s cache of user information and published it worldwide. The result? One of the most shocking data breaches of the internet age. Overnight, millions of unfaithful spouses had their real names, addresses and sexual preferences published online in a searchable database that anyone could browse.

Turns the scandal into a human story
Revisado: 04-30-25
Love the way that we get both the straight facts from the news about the scandal as well as a few specific stories about real human beings involved in the affair. That kept this from ever becoming just another data dump. There were people to care about.
The writing was spectacular and the narrator had incredible tone, delivery, and pacing. The only reason I'll dock a star from their performance is that there were frequently strange mispronunciations of words, to the point where I had to look up if this was a real person or a bot doing the voice.
But altogether this was fantastic. Highly recommended!

Historia
In this stunning audiobook, Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers" - the best and the brightest, the most famous, and the most successful. He asks the question: What makes high-achievers different? His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: That is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing.

Historia
Fumio Sasaki is not an enlightened minimalism expert or organizing guru like Marie Kondo - he's just a regular guy who was stressed out and constantly comparing himself to others, until one day he decided to change his life by saying goodbye to everything he didn't absolutely need. The effects were remarkable: Sasaki gained true freedom, new focus, and a real sense of gratitude for everything around him.

concise thoughts and anecdotes - written with a minimalist style!
Revisado: 12-30-24
The writing was simple and concise and yet thoughtful and insightful. The personal anecdotes added just enough meat to the hot pot to make it hearty and satisfying. LOVED this book.

What happens when Paul Simon, widely considered one of the greatest songwriters in music history, and Malcolm Gladwell, the bestselling author and podcast host, sit down together, with a tape recorder and a guitar? Miracle and Wonder: Conversations with Paul Simon is part memoir, part investigation, and unlike any creative portrait you’ve ever heard before.

Incredible. Gladwell is to narration what Simon is to singing and songwriting. They both just have a sound to their voice and a style to their delivery that is comforting and heartfelt and irresistible.

Historia
Richard Marx is one of the most accomplished singer-songwriters in the history of popular music. His self-titled 1987 album went triple platinum and made him the first male solo artist (and second solo artist overall after Whitney Houston) to have four singles from their debut crack the top three on the Billboard Hot 100. His follow-up, 1989’s Repeat Offender, was an even bigger smash, going quadruple platinum and landing two singles at number one.

The perfect voice
Revisado: 11-07-24
Richard has a way of telling stories that keeps me captivated, and his narration is just as good as the writing. It's never been so obvious that a guy was decent, devoted, and driven. He's been involved with so many iconic songs that it's almost hard to believe. And then to listen to his most recent releases and realize he's STILL got the gift! The ONLY nitpick I have is that Richard uses the word "immediately" so often you'd think he was getting royalties from it. But that's a tiny, tiny critique of an otherwise truly outstanding memoir. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Historia
Why is Miami… Miami? What does the heartbreaking fate of the cheetah tell us about the way we raise our children? Why do Ivy League schools care so much about sports? What is the Magic Third, and what does it mean for racial harmony? In this provocative new work, Malcolm Gladwell returns to the subject of social epidemics and tipping points, this time with the aim of explaining the dark side of contagious phenomena. Through a series of gripping stories, Gladwell traces the rise of a new and troubling form of social engineering

compelling stories and propulsive questions
Revisado: 10-13-24
I could listen to Malcolm Gladwell read the phone book, so the fact that the books he writes are written with as much charisma as they are style and empathy just makes me drunk on his work. Love it.

Though there are many factors behind such success, including luck and the contributions of his creative partner Marshall Herskovitz, he’s known to have a special talent for bringing out the best in the people he’s worked with, notably the actors. In those intense collaborations, he seeks to discover the small pieces of connective tissue, vulnerability, and fellowship that can help an actor realize their character in full.

great stories about making great movies
Revisado: 09-19-24
The stories are generous with praise but honest about everybody's challenges and shortcomings. It makes the triumphs achieved that much more touching and inspiring. I went in expecting Adventures In the Screen Trade, and that held me back at first. This is a VERY different book. But take it on its own terms and it becomes marvelously done.

thoughtful and powerful examination
Revisado: 06-28-24
The series is thoughtful and powerful. This is journalism at its finest. They don't pretend not to have a point of view or bias or emotional reaction to any of it, but instead use their own perspectives and histories to prompt themselves to ask more personal and profound questions. The result is reporting that feels both thoroughly researched and personally affecting.
