Loved it!
Revisado: 04-30-25
I loved this book. I think it has some serious issues with how it portrays gender/minority, and it has "the white guy saved the day" syndrome, but I still really loved it. It is well written, has a very unique concept, and I think the characterization, aside from the painful clichés thrust upon the woman and black man, is extremely well done. I actually really love most of the characterization of those two, as well, when they aren't being hammered by their own clichés. Overall, I recommend it. Just get ready to cringe a little at parts.

The Banished Lands has a violent past where armies of men and giants clashed in battle, but now giants are seen, the stones weep blood, and giant wyrms are stirring. Those who can still read the signs see a threat far greater than the ancient wars. For if the Black Sun gains ascendancy, mankind's hopes and dreams will fall to dust....

Just Okay
Revisado: 03-04-25
Some spoilers ahead.
This was recommended to me by a friend, and I have to admit, if I'd found it on my own, I probably wouldn't have made it past the first ten chapters. I didn't start to get properly invested until about halfway through, and I'm still not completely certain if I would recommend it. Still, this is my friend's "favorite book," so don't take my word for it. Give it a go.
I will say I found the voice acting positively distracting at times. There's a crucial moment where a prophesy is being foretold, and I had to listen to it four times, not just because it was cryptic (as all prophesy should be), but because the voice actor used the most stilted voice for the character reading. I. cannot. follow. someone. giving me. information. like this. Just awful. And then, we have the accent changes, at one point of a main character! This coupled with some of the names sounding very similar at various points of the book makes for some difficult listening.
The fantasy element of following "men and women's roles" I just find tiresome and outdated. Just a personal irritation, as I know this will make it feel more authentically medieval to some readers. To me, it just feels like I've been steeped knee-high in manly people having manly feels about manly things. If you're a young man exploring what it means to be honorable, you might not mind this as much. I just want to slap someone every time the sister is ignored when she asks a relevant question or every time she feels the need to whine and apologize for breathing. "But there are strong female characters!" Sure. But the overarching dialogue is that that is the exception, not the norm. That kind of sexism makes this book feel very dated at times.
Lastly, dear author: the multitude of dog deaths. Just why. They felt like a half-measure, where a human death would've been more impactful. They felt like a lack of commitment to the danger and horror of the moment, coupled with a feeling that the dog's life, in being inferior, was an acceptable throwaway. At one point, we're teased with the potential danger of a young boy's death. Then, he's pulled back, rescued, and a small dog randomly dies instead, seeming to throw itself bodily into the scene, to show what MIGHT have happened to the boy. Why the half-measure? Treat the fictional dogs with the respect they deserve, by not making them throwaways, and treat the moments like they deserve by not feeding them what is obviously considered a throwaway life.
Litany of complaints out of the way: it's an okay book. If none of the above bothers you, give it a go. You're likely the target audience and might even enjoy it. I would still read the physical novel if you have a chance, however, to get around the voice acting issues.

Just Yes!
Revisado: 03-01-25
I feel like every complaint I've had for every other fantasy book in the past ten years is made up for by reading this novel. Fantastic female lead. Female best friend who isn't a throwaway character. Relationship that doesn't have unnecessary drama (just real drama). A plot that moves at a good pace. I love that the lead is strong, but not overpowered. I was constantly cheering for her, but always aware she might fail.
This is everything I want in a novel. My only complaint is that there's only one book in this series.

Historia
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College–Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Good, but more than a little soapy
Revisado: 02-14-25
The story is great, the voice acting is great, and I genuinely like the characters. HOWEVER. Violet clinging to "I'm mad at my boyfriend because reasons!" gets so old, so fast. I was tired of it in the last book. I'm beyond tired of it in this book. The story is strong enough to carry itself. It doesn't need soap opera mechanics to keep you invested. I found myself wanting to skip the spicy scenes (I KNOW, RIGHT?) because I was just so sick of her internal monologue trying to justify being upset with him or holding herself distant! Like, if you want that push-pull, find something for your characters to get genuinely upset about.

Historia
Robin Loxleigh and his sister Marianne are the hit of the Season, so attractive and delightful that nobody looks behind their pretty faces. Until Robin sets his sights on Sir John Hartlebury's heiress niece. The notoriously graceless baronet isn't impressed by good looks, or fooled by false charm. He's sure Robin is a liar - a fortune hunter, a card sharp, and a heartless, greedy fraud - and he'll protect his niece, whatever it takes.

Lovely Romance Story, Inconsistent Narration
Revisado: 12-13-24
(Small spoilers, nothing severe)
The story is very sweet, if a little predictable, but altogether enjoyable. I believe I'm in the minority saying this, but the narrator wasn't my cup of tea. I felt James' (a black man) voice was "black men sound like this, right?" without any more thought put into it. It also felt like the 32-year-old protagonist sounded around 70. His mentor, James, who he felt was like a father, sounded around a fourth his age. This continuously put me off, and I found myself constantly rerunning lines through my head in a slightly younger voice to wrap my head around why a scene should be appealing. Hearing a 70 year old confessing to a 20-something just wouldn't do it for me. All of the narrator's other voices were perfect, so I'm really disappointed with these major decisions.
Still, worth reading, albeit perhaps in physical form.

Historia
When the biggest colony ship in human history was sent to settle a paradise world, an accident hurtled it deep into uncharted space. A thousand light years from Earth, with no way home and no way to call for help, the colonists’ only hope for survival was the one barely habitable planet in range, a nightmare world they named Croatoan. Landing on the only five mountain peaks tall enough to rise above the lethal acid clouds, the settlers carved a civilization from the rock.

Worth Waiting for the Plot to Pick Up!
Revisado: 11-24-24
This story has a nice, slow lead-in that really sets the pace and tone for the rest of the story. If you're someone put off by a slow lead-in, give this one a chance! No spoilers, but the plot is well conceived and promises layers of intrigue. The ending gave me goosebumps. I can't wait to read the next installment.

Fantastic. Loved the story. Loved the narration. So excited to follow a different character from earlier in the series (one of my fav characters). It was great getting to hear his inner thoughts and motives, and the story between the two protagonists was *chef's kiss*.

Neal Stephenson is a blazing new force on the sci-fi scene. With the groundbreaking cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, he has "vaulted onto the literary stage." It weaves virtual reality, Sumerian myth, and just about everything in between with a cool, hip cybersensibility - in short, it is the gigathriller of the information age.

Well!
Revisado: 07-23-24
The beginning of the book, I was suggesting it to all of my friends. By about the halfway point, I had disclaimers on the recommendation. By the end, I was like, "I mean, you MIGHT still like it?"
Can we go back to the beginning, please? Let me start by saying, this book has a massively sexualized 15 year old who has a graphic sex scene with a much, much older man and is basically oggled by every man (other than the main character) throughout the entire book. The oggling felt like it was supposed to feel: skeevy. But the sex scene feels creepy because it DOESN'T feel creepy! It feels like a hot sex scene between two willing partners, not a statutory rape scene. I'm all for women's empowerment at any age, but this just felt like a man objectifying very young women, and I was not about that.
Second, the Babelspeak made me feel like I was at a conspiracy theorist's crazy and boring Ted talk, and that everyone around me, including the friends and coworkers I respected around me, had drank the kool-aid!
Loved the setting, loved the mc, love love loved the action scenes. But these second two things nearly had me walking away from the book several times.

Jane Sagan: Soldier. Killer. Lover. Dreamer. In John Scalzi's best-selling Old Man's War series of science-fiction novels, we see this warrior woman as the other characters see her - silent and strong, from the outside. But now The Sagan Diary shows us Sagan from another point of view: her own, as she prepares to leave military life and join her new husband and adopted daughter on a colony world.

Worth a Listen
Revisado: 07-02-24
This style is extremely different from his other works. It is very slow, thoughtful, and introspective, as it was meant to be. Overall, it isn't my personal favorite work, specifically because I enjoy the more action-packed styles of writing and think that Scalzi manages to pack enough thought, emotion, and introspection into those works to make every moment hit home. Still, I recommend listening to this. For me, this book is the true ending to The Ghost Brigades, and contains moments that the previous novel felt stunted for not delivering. I feel like my journey is now complete for having read it, and I suggest that if you were dissatisfied with the ending of Ghost Brigades that you read this one, too.
Although, perhaps not while driving at night. The vibe is very, very relaxing.

Historia
All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.
