As a classical archaeology major I can attest the accuracy of the portrayal of this world based on Ancient Rome, which is an odd thing to say about fantasy, but it’s close to historical fiction. Beyond that, the story is compelling, the characters are complex, and the writing is excellent. Loved this trilogy. Hoping to read more stories set in this world.

This book is simply delightful. The author is an experienced narrator and does a wonderful job of reading his own first novel. Hoping he writes many more.

I have loved all of Jim Butcher's work, but this is my favorite. Adventure with pauses for copious amount of properly brewed tea and talking cats. All my favorite things in one place. I can't wait for the next one.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This book combines elements of Treasure Island, Oliver Twist and Frankenstein. A boy cursed with a girl's name, Rosamund has had a difficult life in the orphanage. It was made bearable by three adult staff members who have taken care of him since the day he was left on the doorstep. He longs for a life at sea, like his hero Master Fransitart, but instead is selected to become an apprentice lamplighter. Foundling tells the story of his travels through an amazing world called the Half Continent, and the many terrifying, bizarre and interesting people he meets along the way. D.M. Cornish has invented whole new languages that sound really familiar. One of my favorite things about this book is the masterful foreshadowing. All the clues are there, if only you pay attention.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Foundling?

Rosamund meets a glammergorn, a small monster, called Freckle, who seems to know all about Rosamund. They have a long conversation, but Rosamund ends up with more questions than answers.

Which scene was your favorite?

Rosamund meets Mr. Fouracres, a postman. Fouracres is the first person Rosamund has ever met who not only has conversations with monsters, but admits to having them as friends.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Foundling - A Tale of the Half Continent

Any additional comments?

Humphrey Bower does an amazing job narrating this story. He has to create a wide variety of voices for non-humans.

Where does The Night Circus rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the very best audiobooks ever. It was designed to be read aloud, and I love Jim Dale's voices. I don't understand why he made the twins Irish, but it worked for me.

What other book might you compare The Night Circus to and why?

The story reminds me of the work of Isak Dinesen, because it's so imaginitive and the descriptions make everything come alive.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I didn't want to listen to it all in one sitting. I had to ration my self to a few minutes at a time because I didn't want it to end. It's the kind of book you can listen to over and over and hear something new every time.

Twilight for grownups

Deborah Harkness has taken the vampire genre to a whole new level. The settings are described in rich detail, evoking locations from Oxford, England to Medieval France to upstate New York. Meticulously researched, it combines history and science to explain the supernatural. Modern science is woven seemlessly into the plot contrasting with the rich alchemical symbolism. As a love story, it is compelling. Two strong characters who slowly come to acknowledge their feelings for each other. Bring on volume two!
