Parker-Chan deftly weaves a story centered around the idea of what desire costs us. The characters are dynamic and complicated, and evolve as the story progresses. We observe, via many characters, what desire costs and how we pay shapes us. Also, a beautiful and complicated love story.

This is a slow book, with a lot of building and some repetition. It’s not bad and serves it’s purpose, but just know that as you go into it. Also, the ending is both fitting in parts, for the historical context, with some aspects of the rather unbelievable magical narrator save aspects as well.

Beautiful and Haunting, just like the house.

The beginning is slow- stick with it! You’ll come to understand what it’s about in time. Don’t expect anything like her last book, come at it with a fresh perspective.

Haunting and beautiful story. A good social commentary about how our society has poised us to commercialize everything, including our pain, our guilt. Lots of folks say there is no plot. The plot is not the point here.

The premise is interesting and the world and magic system in the first half are very interesting. But, towards the halfway point, it starts to drag quite a bit, and the narrative loses force. The ending is...too perfect and poorly set up.

Levin drops us in seamlessly into the LIGO saga, from it’s easy beginnings to it’s final conclusion. Despite the fact that many readers will know how the story ends, she captures the intensity of how it must have felt to labor over this massive project and hope that useful data would come out. I had goosebumps at the end, and felt that she captured the human aspects of discovery- the parts of science that are personal and messy and not objective. The book is put together for a non-physics, non-science audience and Levin writes (and reads) beautiful, elegant prose about the sound that black holes make as they collide.

Fantastic set of readers to carry the the many voices of this story. Lalami’s narrative seeks answers to the questions: what is home? Who is “a real American”? And who gets to decide? Even more poignant in these times once again filled with hate for immigrants.

The story is beautifully written - Cassara has some sentences that are truly heart breaking and exquisitely crafted.
I started this book without knowing much about the NYC ballroom culture of the 80s, and as a consequence of reading, spent a lot of time learning about houses etc. It is worth point out that the book gets some aspects of history incorrectly- namely the availability of tests to determine HIV status, but it, at least to me, captures the emotional spirit of the time, of the fear, the heartbreak.
The book is heavy, and shows some glimpses of the violence is done to trans women of color. But it balances some of this with the slice of life, with the joys, dreams and laughs of its main characters.

Overall, a very inventive spin on the classic tale. The end was a bit predictable, but made up for by Naomi’s beautiful language. The audio book switch between characters can be a bit hard to follow at times.
