Historia
After eighty years of fragile peace, the Architects are back, wreaking havoc as they consume entire planets. In the past, Originator artifacts—vestiges of a long-vanished civilization—could save a world from annihilation. This time, the Architects have discovered a way to circumvent these protective relics. Suddenly, no planet is safe. Facing impending extinction, the Human Colonies are in turmoil. While some believe a unified front is the only way to stop the Architects, others insist humanity should fight alone.

Mostly forgettable
Revisado: 12-16-22
This book feels like an attempt to stall for time while the author works on the third and (I assume) final installment of the series. And that would be fine, if the filler were more compelling, but most of it just ... wasn't.

Historia
The world has changed. Now, when someone is murdered, they almost always come back to life—and there are professionals, called “dispatchers”, who kill in order to save lives, to give those near the end a second chance. Tony Valdez is a dispatcher, and he has never been busier. But for as much as the world has changed, some things have stayed the same. Greed, corruption, and avarice are still in full swing.

Advertising was a little heavy-handed

This story reads like Amazon gave Scalzi a Chicago vacation in exchange for writing a scene in which their products featured prominently.

Historia
New York Times best-selling author Kim Stanley Robinson returns with a bold and brilliant vision of New York City in the next century. As the sea levels rose, every street became a canal. Every skyscraper an island. For the residents of one apartment building in Madison Square, however, New York in the year 2140 is far from a drowned city. There is the market trader, who finds opportunities where others find trouble. There is the detective, whose work will never disappear—along with the lawyers, of course.

Why not a full-cast reading?
Revisado: 07-12-21
The format of the audio performance is rather odd. They had enough performers that they could have done a full-cast reading, but instead they assigned performers based on whose point of view a chapter followed, with a given chapter's performer voicing every character. The result wasn't bad, really—just a little baffling.

Historia
With no water, no air, and no native life, the planet Gora is unremarkable. The only thing it has going for it is a chance proximity to more popular worlds, making it a decent stopover for ships traveling between the wormholes that keep the Galactic Commons connected. If deep space is a highway, Gora is just your average truck stop. The Five-Hop is run by an enterprising alien and her sometimes helpful child, who work hard to provide a little piece of home to everyone passing through.

Interesting story, shaky narration
Revisado: 05-09-21
The story is pretty similar in tone to the previous books in the series, where the stakes are mostly low and the people are mostly friendly. If you're looking for "slice of life but about aliens," this book's got you covered.
Unfortunately, the narration is a little hit-or-miss. Have you ever been reading something aloud, gotten to the end of a line, and then restarted the sentence because you realized you'd placed the emphasis incorrectly? If you can imagine having to press on instead of taking the sentence from the top, you can imagine the cadence if this book; it sounds like Rachel Dulude never got a second take on most lines. It mostly feels like a failure of direction.

Andrea Vernon always thought she would spend her life living in Paris writing thought-provoking historical novels all day and sipping wine on the Seine all night. But the reality is she's drowning in debt, has no prospects, and is forced to move back to Queens, where her parents remind her daily that they are very interested in grandchildren. Then, one morning, she is kidnapped, interviewed, and hired as an administrative assistant by the Corporation for UltraHuman Protection. Superheroes for hire, using their powers for good. What could possibly go wrong?

What William Gibson did for science fiction, China Miéville has done for fantasy, shattering old paradigms with fiercely imaginative works of startling, often shocking, intensity. Now from this brilliant writer comes a groundbreaking collection of stories, many of them previously unavailable in the United States, and including four never-before-published tales - one set in Miéville’s signature fantasy world of New Crobuzon.

I've only recently started reading China Mieville, but he's become a fast favorite. While many of these short stories share themes, each comes at the concepts from different angles and avoids feeling redundant.

Historia
After the War of the Gods, the demons were cast out and fell to the world. Mankind was nearly eradicated by the seemingly unstoppable beasts until the gods sent the great hero, Ramrowan, to save them. He united the tribes, gave them magic, and drove the demons into the sea. Ever since, the land has belonged to man, and the oceans have remained an uncrossable hell, leaving the continent of Lok isolated.

Exactly the sort of shallow power fantasy you'd expect from someone wrapped up in the "sad puppy" Hugo debacle. Wouldn't have wasted my time if I'd known about that connection beforehand.

VERY Derivative
Revisado: 08-07-16
Take Game of Thrones, Rome, and Hunger Games, throw them in a blender with pseudo-lightsabers and generic sci-fi elements, and you've got this series in a nutshell. The prose is vaguely embarrassing throughout, and Brown has borrowed way too many vocabulary tics from his source material, especially those of George RR Martin. It's far from the worst thing I've ever read, but it's entirely forgettable.

Historia
The fourth book in the NYT best-selling Expanse series, Cibola Burn sees the crew of the Rocinante on a new frontier, as the rush to colonize the new planets threatens to outrun law and order and give way to war and chaos. Enter a new frontier. "An empty apartment, a missing family, that's creepy. But this is like finding a military base with no one on it. Fighters and tanks idling on the runway with no drivers. This is bad juju. Something wrong happened here. What you should do is tell everyone to leave".
