Historia
Prizewinning historian Chris Wickham defies the conventional view of the Dark Ages in European history with a work of remarkable scope and rigorous yet accessible scholarship. Drawing on a wealth of new material and featuring a thoughtful synthesis of historical and archaeological approaches, Wickham argues that these centuries were critical in the formulation of European identity. Far from being a middle period between more significant epochs, this age has much to tell us in its own right about the progress of culture and the development of political thought.

So much detail (in a good way)
Revisado: 09-17-23
The narrator is a bit stilted
It’s a great story though, told with a clear and credible point of view.

Historia
In AD 476, the last of Rome's emperors, known as "Augustulus", was deposed by a barbarian general, the son of one of Attila the Hun's henchmen. With the imperial vestments dispatched to Constantinople, the curtain fell on the Roman empire in Western Europe, its territories divided among successor kingdoms constructed around barbarian military manpower. But, if the Roman Empire was dead, Romans across much of the old empire still lived, holding on to their lands, their values, and their institutions.

Well written, well read
Revisado: 06-12-17
Peter Heather knows what he is writing about very well. It's a fascinating period in history. And he's very funny, occasionally colloquial and generally a good time.
This narrator is worthy of his material. He knows when the author is being wry, playful, sarcastic etc and delivers the material appropriately.
I may well just go back to the beginning and listen to it all over again.

Historia
John Churchill, the Duke of Marlborough (1644-1722), was one of the greatest military commanders and statesmen in the history of England. Victorious in the Battles of Blenheim (1704) and Ramillies (1706) and countless other campaigns, Marlborough, whose political intrigues were almost as legendary as his military skill, never fought a battle he didn't win. Marlborough also bequeathed the world another great British military strategist and diplomat, his descendant, Winston S. Churchill.

Long, but what a story!
Revisado: 12-28-16
The Duke of M lived and lead in the middle of fascinating times. Well written, and well-spiced with the author's own point of view. Never ducks a controversy and had strong views. If you are looking for even-handed, this is not. But what fun!

During the expository beginning I just about gave up.
But the story picked up nicely and Our Hero has sundry adventures. A nice action-packed tale once you get in a bit.

Very much the European view
Revisado: 07-17-16
Was hoping to hear the story from the Turkish point of view. But the author couldn't quite get his head around to the other side.
A little dry, it is a story about war, and a little derring-do would have livened it up a bit.

Historia
The death of the Roman Empire is one of the perennial mysteries of world history. Now, in this groundbreaking book, Peter Heather proposes a stunning new solution: Centuries of imperialism turned the neighbors Rome called barbarians into an enemy capable of dismantling an Empire that had dominated their lives for so long. A leading authority on the late Roman Empire and on the barbarians, Heather relates the extraordinary story of how Europe's barbarians, transformed by centuries of contact with Rome on every possible level, eventually pulled the empire apart.

Revisado: 11-23-15
A good telling of some complicated stuff. I found myself shouting when some things were not pronounced the way I thought, but that is minor.
Narrator at least knew a joke when he found one, and there are quite a few wry asides, eye.

The Golden Age of the Spanish Empire would establish five centuries of Western supremacy across the globe and usher in an era of transatlantic exploration that eventually gave rise to the modern world. It was a time of discovery and adventure, of great political and social change - it was a time when Spain learned to rule the world.

Having only heard Spain's history through the prism of wars with England and the Netherlands, and vignettes about Columbus, this was a good walk through almost two centuries of Spanish history.
Leaves me wanting to know more, and that is a compliment.

Andrew Roberts' Napoleon is the first one-volume biography to take advantage of the recent publication of Napoleon's thirty-three thousand letters, which radically transform our understanding of his character and motivation. At last we see him as he was: protean multitasker, decisive, surprisingly willing to forgive his enemies and his errant wife Josephine.

Empires and Barbarians presents a fresh, provocative look at how a recognizable Europe came into being in the first millennium AD. With sharp analytic insight, Peter Heather explores the dynamics of migration and social and economic interaction that changed two vastly different worlds--the undeveloped barbarian world and the sophisticated Roman Empire--into remarkably similar societies and states.

Peter Heather deserved better
Revisado: 12-20-14
Would you listen to Empires and Barbarians again? Why?
Enjoyed the book, and the humor. There is a lot of content there, and I'd go back again and listen, now that I know where it's going
What did you like best about this story?
The tour of Europe -- taking each section in turn
How could the performance have been better?
The narrator was horrible. Peter Heather is a very witty man, and I don't think the narrator got most of his jokes. Mr. Heather deserves a narrator erudite enough to know when he is being funny! There is a lot of warmth and humanity in this book, too, which is also obscured by the delivery.
