Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Narrator human or electronic?
Revisado: 07-05-24
This story plot felt overly contrived and I had little to no feelings for the characters. I plowed through to the end but often half listening. The narrator’s voice has very little change in cadence or tone and so not easy to listen to. I’m glad I can move on to something else.

Have you ever wondered "Why did I do that?" or "Why can't I just control my behavior?" Others may judge our reactions and think, "What's wrong with that person?" When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question. Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking and profound shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”

Stuff I Knew Fleshed Out
Revisado: 03-19-24
I liked the format of having Oprah and the “expert” talk. I already knew a lot about trauma, childhood trauma and its effects, but there were details and explanations that were very helpful.

Historia
For many, the past few years have been defined by climate disaster. Stories about once-in-a-lifetime hurricanes, floods, fires, droughts, and even snowstorms are now commonplace. But dramatic weather events are not new and Northeaster, Cathie Pelletier's breathtaking account of the 1952 snowstorm that blanketed New England, offers a valuable reminder about nature's capacity for destruction as well as insight into the human instinct for preservation.

A poignant excavation
Revisado: 02-23-24
A well written glimpse into the common experience of a community. I liked the way the author unfolded the stories of the characters and their experiences of the storm concurrently.

Historia
With a wealth of never-before-accessed materials, Heather Clark brings to life the brilliant Sylvia Plath, who had precocious poetic ambition and was an accomplished published writer even before she became a star at Smith College. Refusing to read Plath’s work as if her every act was a harbinger of her tragic fate, Clark considers the sociopolitical context as she thoroughly explores Plath’s world.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

I have a hard time finding fiction that I enjoy, but This book was excellent! The character development, dialogue, story line, writing— intelligent but easy to follow. Never slick or trite. I loved this.

Too tedious and going nowhere
Revisado: 07-05-22
I tried— but couldn’t get through this. Too tedious and long- winded and the initial “mystery” lingered without sensible reason. Disappointed I paid for this.

Historia
When Rosamond Halsey Carr first arrived in Africa, she didn't realize that she would spend the rest of her life there. As a young fashion illustrator living in New York City in the 1940s, she seemed the least likely candidate for such a life of adventure. But marriage to a hunter-explorer took her to what was then the Belgian Congo, and divorce left her determined to stay on in neighboring Rwanda as the manager of a flower plantation.

Loved this book
Revisado: 04-03-22
This book was so beautifully written and read. I didn’t want it to end and I’m left wanting to give to the author’s charitable work. I learned so much about the awful killing and political struggles in Africa. I generally avoid political issues because I find them tedious and impossible to fathom -ultimately unsolvable…but the author’s experience and involvement made it more relatable for me.
I loved this book.

Can’t get past the too-many-characters start

I really wanted to love this book, having read the author’s story of her life with Pat Conroy. But I have listened to a few hours and am lost with all the characters— too many details and I can’t envision anything.

Narrator not suited
Revisado: 03-26-22
I loved the characters, writing style and plot/story line.
I found the narrator not suited to the southern dialect I would expect. His crisp ? Heartland? Pronunciation and odd “L” sound were a bit annoying.
