Historia
In her gripping debut novel, Lucy Atkins takes us on one woman's journey to the beautiful and rugged Pacific Northwest to discover the dark secrets of her family's past so she can understand and accept herself. Kal McKenzie was never close to her mother, Elena, whose coldness toward her spoiled any chance of a good relationship. When Elena dies of cancer, Kal feels forlorn: How do you mourn a mother who, inexplicably, just didn't seem to love you?

American accent Marge Simpson
Revisado: 10-08-24
The British narrator's American accents are so unsettling - she's got the vowels all wrong and she's not representing any American accent but all of them at the same time. Why is one of the characters Marge Simpson?
Otherwise good story, a bit long in many parts.
I read other Lucy Atkins books before this and I am glad she improved her writing from this debut story. I look forward to more.

too long
Revisado: 08-11-24
a lot of interesting twists on the apocalypse story but way too long. there are lengthy descriptions that are wholly unnecessary. Childbirth, a sex offenders thoughts, detailed description of a Dracula movie, childish reminiscing. this is set in the future and there are major errors and inconsistencies in what is and isn't known by future humans. our main character is known and loved by all but he didn't win me over. I finished this out of spite but 35 hours? I skipped ahead a lot, missed stuff and didn't care. kind of a tweet story really.

fun read, audio issues
Revisado: 05-19-24
the story is interesting, characters Likable and the mystery intriguing. my one issue is the narrators volume goes super quiet and then painfully loud within the blink of an eye. the narrator does the characters really well but get so quiet and then so loud.

Revisado: 05-19-24
the story seems okay, a little basic but not terrible. the reader makes so many of the characters sound really whiney. it grates on my ears, hence why I'm not finishing the book.

Historia
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Super interesting end of world sci-fi fantasy
Revisado: 10-10-17
This is a really interesting take on the end of the world. Perhaps our own future will include people with extraordinary skills who bring about the apocalypse. Very engagine story. Excellent narration. The end was a little rushed and some of the detailed sex stuff toward the end dragged the story to an unneccessary halt but otherwise decent enough.

Historia
In a warren of crumbling buildings and desperate people called the Old City, there stands a hospital with cinderblock walls that echo the screams of the poor souls inside. In the hospital, there is a woman. Her hair, once blond, hangs in tangles down her back. She doesn't remember why she's in such a terrible place. Just a tea party long ago, and long ears, and blood.

Excellent Alice version, narration could be better
Revisado: 10-10-17
This is a great retelling of the Alice story with a modern edge. The narrator does the voice of Hatcher as that of an old, curmugedly man. Alice is in her 20s and it said he was 10 years older than her. Why does he sound like he's 70 instead of a 30 year old love interest. That made for bumpy listening but otherwise it was all pretty enjoyable.

Fun moderan, Australian gothic romance
Revisado: 05-30-17
Would you consider the audio edition of Thornwood House to be better than the print version?
I actually bought the print book as well so I can read the great writing. Romer is such a good writer I wanted to savor her words. I haven't read the whole book so I can't really answer this yet. I'll update if I can ...
What other book might you compare Thornwood House to and why?
I had just read Kate Grenville's colonial Australia trilogy and I found this similar. Both authors are great writers and both stories are set in Australia. Fabulous use of words and descriptions of places and people.
What about Eloise Oxer’s performance did you like?
She's a wonderful reader. She changed her voice for the various characters and has an adorable accent. She really captured the eloquence of the writing, the mystery of the story and the suspense of the discoveries.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I was reluctant to have to stop but always looked forward to getting back to see what would happen next.
Any additional comments?
I liked this book and story and will read more Romer just to enjoy her beautiful use of words some more.

Historia
In 1631, Sara de Vos is admitted as a master painter to the Guild of St. Luke's in Holland, the first woman to be so recognized. Three hundred years later, only one work attributed to de Vos is known to remain - a haunting winter scene, At the Edge of a Wood, which hangs over the bed of a wealthy descendant of the original owner. An Australian grad student, Ellie Shipley, struggling to stay afloat in New York, agrees to paint a forgery of the landscape, a decision that will haunt her.

Great read/listen
Revisado: 05-30-17
If you could sum up The Last Painting of Sara de Vos in three words, what would they be?
Tells the story of a painting, its creation and its owners from 1630 to the present time. The narration was great though the jumping through time happens so quickly that it's sometime difficult to tell "when" we are especially because Ellie's story is told during two different time periods. But, I really liked the story. It reminded me of Red Violin but about a painting instead.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Sarah de Vos. She persevered. But, I liked all the characters really.
What about Edoardo Ballerini’s performance did you like?
He has a great voice, changed his voice for various characters and is just wonderful to listen to.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No laughing or crying - well at least not for me. There certainly are funny and sad parts but I found the book very satisfying.
Any additional comments?
I really appreciated that there are book group questions at the end. Often those aren't included in the audio part and I enjoyed hearing them and thinking about them. I also appreciated that they were read by the author himself.
