Historia
For years, Aidan Cullen has dreamed of becoming a successful crime writer. When his hard work finally pays off and his first book is published, what should have been a night of celebration unravels into an evening of horror. Left for dead after a brutal attack, trauma leaves him paranoid and reclusive, and he retreats to the remote countryside with only his dog Nanook for company. With the world kept at arm’s length, he begins to feel safe. That is, until a woman is murdered at the end of his road.

Predictable and Overdramatic
Revisado: 03-30-25
I couldn't wait for this one to be over. The "twist" was painfully obvious from the beginning. This was, in part, because the story was cliché, but also because of the way the story was read. It might be better to read the paper version rather than to listen to it because the way the narration was dramatized made the plot a dead giveaway. Besides the unintentional total lack of mystery, this is just a very depressing book. I don't expect murder mysteries to be uplifting or anything, but this was just SO... utterly miserable in tone.
The writing quality was good and because of that, I won't totally write this author off, but I pretty much hated this particular book. I am not sure if I would have felt this negative if the reading had been done differently though. It's not particularly bad narration either, just... a very poor choice of style for this particular story.
Someone in the production of this audiobook should have insisted it be done differently.

Clever and Addictive
Revisado: 02-19-25
I got sucked into this one and couldn't stop listening. Once the stage was set, it was quite the wild ride. Thought it was going to be rather predictable but... it wasn't. The narration was excellent. I'd never heard of this author before and am happy to discover he's written quite a lot of books. So, that will keep me busy for a while. Definitely worth a credit. Should be made into a movie.

Couldn't even tolerate it
Revisado: 01-01-25
I listened for several hours but found myself in a perpetual state of cringe, so I did myself a favor and stopped listening. The writing is simply terrible, the characters annoying and unbelievable, and the narrator is overdramatic. It's just bad in every possible way.

Boring and unbelievable
Revisado: 11-10-24
This story never managed to make me care about the characters or even what happened. The premise was also ridiculously unbelievable. Despite it being a free listen and the narration being pleasant, I regret listening to it.

God is change. That is the central truth of the Earthseed movement, whose unlikely prophet is 18-year-old Lauren Olamina. The young woman's diary entries tell the story of her life amid a violent 21st-century hell of walled neighborhoods and drug-crazed pyromaniacs - and reveal her evolving Earthseed philosophy. Against a backdrop of horror emerges a message of hope: if we are willing to embrace divine change, we will survive to fulfill our destiny among the stars.

Depressing
Revisado: 08-10-24
The most interesting thing about this book is also the most terrifying. Hopefully it is less predictive than it seems. Can't believe it was written back in 1993. It's well written and well read, but it's really just a super depressing story. I found no satisfaction in finishing it other than I'm thankful it's over and life in CA hasn't gotten quite that bad yet. it's on it's way though, it seems.

Revisado: 05-16-24
The first half of this book focuses on character development. You won't see where it's all going at first. Enjoy getting to know people, then brace yourself as the story picks up speed and ends in a wild nail biting ride.
The narration was top notch. I definitely recommend this book.

Amateur and over dramatic
Revisado: 05-08-24
I have enjoyed other works by this author, and the premise behind this story was fine, I guess. The writing was cringe, however, and made it difficult to continue listening to. It was also just all over the place with way too much character hopping. None of the characters felt real or made me care about them or like them. I finished it, but I'm glad it's over.

Well done!
Revisado: 04-30-24
Well written, engaging, exciting and insightful. The narration was just right. Definitely a "page turner".
I typically don't listen to novellas or short stories because I go through books so fast and these don't last long enough to be worth the price. But this one was included in my membership so there was no credit lost. Glad I gave it a shot because it was really good. Now I have a new author to follow, and I know his full length books are probably worth purchasing because I got this sample of his skill and style.

The summer in question started out with hot, fun-filled days and new friendships. We had just turned thirteen and had our whole lives ahead of us. But that was before her. Before we became known as the Hixton Five and our lives become defined by one night. It’s hard to believe twenty years have passed since she was locked away. But now she’s free and strange things have started to happen. When I close my eyes, the creeping anxiety and fear is overwhelming and all too real. Because the monster is back, and I know she has a score to settle with us.

Warning!
Revisado: 04-25-24
This book is gross and disturbing and should come with trigger warnings. The characters are flat and uninteresting. The narration is SO slow and over dramatic. I don't understand why this book has the positive reviews it does.
Trigger warning: this book contains child abuse and pedophilia and probably other horrible things. I regret listening to as much as I did.
