Action-Packed
Revisado: 02-23-23
I liked Ellie and Parker in the first book, but I was happy to see their character growth in this book. The addition of a non-binary character was a pleasant surprise. But in my heart of hearts, the bats were my most favorite thing.
I thought Jessica's narration was great once I increased the audio speed a bit. But that's just my personal preference.

Historia
Brynn Haper's life has one steadying force - Rachel Maddow. She watches her daily, and after writing to Rachel for a school project - and actually getting a response - Brynn starts drafting emails to Rachel but never sending them. Brynn tells Rachel about breaking up with her first serious girlfriend, about her brother Nick's death, about her passive mother and even worse stepfather, about how she's stuck in remedial courses at school and is considering dropping out. Then Brynn is confronted with a moral dilemma.

Brynn is a refreshing character, and I love the voice of the author through her.

Historia
Galaxy “Alex” Stern is the most unlikely member of Yale’s freshman class. Raised in the Los Angeles hinterlands by a hippie mom, Alex dropped out of school early and into a world of shady drug-dealer boyfriends, dead-end jobs, and much, much worse. In fact, by age twenty, she is the sole survivor of a horrific, unsolved multiple homicide. Some might say she’s thrown her life away. But at her hospital bed, Alex is offered a second chance: to attend one of the world’s most prestigious universities on a full ride. What’s the catch, and why her?

Enthralling!
Revisado: 02-04-23
I was hooked from the start. Bardugo's writing is intelligent and funny, grounded, yet having a twisted aspect. I that she makes no bad choices, simply choices that I hadn't thought of yet. Galaxy Stern is one of my favorite characters, ever.
Everything good thing that I could say about the characters or the text is magnified by the narration of Lauren Fortgang. However, Mr Axtell delivers one of my favorite scenes - Alex singing one of her grandmother's songs against a tide of grays. Haunting.

Historia
There is a voice of longing inside each woman. We strive so mightily to be good: good partners, daughters, mothers, employees, and friends. We hope all this striving will make us feel alive. Instead, it leaves us feeling weary, stuck, overwhelmed, and underwhelmed. We look at our lives and wonder: Wasn’t it all supposed to be more beautiful than this? We quickly silence that question, telling ourselves to be grateful, hiding our discontent—even from ourselves.

It flowed around me. Lifted me. Brought me joy. Gave me hope.
It felt familiar, like lost knowledge recovered.
