A Perfect Sequel.

The second installment in The Dirt Bike Detective Series was just as good as the first. I listened to the first book on Audio and I loved it so much I decided to do the same with this book. Douglas L. Hoover will never cease to amaze me with the use of his imagery and there is no greater experience than to be able to listen to the picture being painted for me. I absolutely love the narrator, Ramon de Ocampo, and I think he was the perfect pick for this series. He does a wonderful job not only bringing Hoover’s words to life but also connecting with his inner child to bring these characters to life.

While this story wasn’t as suspenseful as the first I did find it whimsical and entertaining which made it perfect in its own way. I’m very intrigued with the way this series is going and I can’t help but wonder if anyone else in the crew will be able to meet the infamous Odyssey and hear about the other world. I feel like that’s the setup this book was going for but I could be totally wrong and I will continue to ponder this thought as I *not so patiently* wait for the third book. I did really enjoy seeing the friendships between Ollie, Chase, Geo, Jax, and Edward flourish and I love how even when they get annoyed with one another they continue to show up and be there for the group. I, also, really love seeing how their friendships progress, especially because this was a group of kids who didn’t give each other the time of the day the school year before. They're all just a bunch of little misfits who found solace in one another's company and I adore that.

I thought the author did a great job with bringing back characters we met in the first book and loved while also introducing some new characters that, I think, will make appearances in future books. The dynamic between Chase and his sister Aspen is so heartwarming because you don’t often see brothers and sisters caring for one another in books. I think this dynamic is especially important because this book is middle grade and promoting these healthy relationships to growing children can only help nurture them.

Overall this book was whimsical, funny, and heartwarming which is very different from the tragic and suspenseful story that was told in the first book. However I did love this book just as much and even though it’s a middle grade series I will be adding it to my list of series’ to continue because I’m invested with these characters and I cannot wait to see where their story goes.

Entertaining and Imaginative.
Revisado: 06-29-23
I listened to this book as an Audiobook and I’m so glad I did because I truly believe that it was the best way to enjoy this story. Douglas L. Hoover has such a unique writing style with his use of imagery, metaphors, and dialect. The only way to truly grasp the depth of his writing style and ability is to listen to it in all its glory. I think the narrator, Ramon de Ocampo, was the perfect person to bring this story to life. He did a wonderful job putting the depth and emotion behind Hoover’s writing and truly brought the characters to life. There was never any doubt in my mind when our main character was speaking, when our main character was imitating another character, and who our main character was talking to during back and forth conversations. There is no better duo than Hoover and Ocampo ; unless, of course, it’s Ollie and Chase.

This book is a middle grade mystery but, even as an adult, I was entertained, engaged, and wanted to solve the dang mystery myself. The themes that were present in this story were also engaging for adults. There was murder, abduction, lies, and deceit ; and even though they were downplayed due to the intended age group for this book I didn’t think they were any less entertaining. I, also, thought that our characters were very mature for their age and even though they had an obsession with the Paranormal and Supernatural ( I mean, hello, adults love that stuff too ) they made wise and calculated decisions. They were able to accomplish a lot to help protect the town and they didn’t do it in a childish way. While there times they definitely acted their age, except for Jax, they weren’t annoying to read about. They actually made me wish that I was that cool at their age.
The setting of this story held a special place in my heart because it takes place in Colorado and that’s where I live. The descriptions of the Mountains and of Denver were spot on and I appreciated the attention to detail Hoover provided. I could see the rural area that Ollie grew up in and I could picture the structure / location of Raven Ridge Academy. I could envision the Gargoyles that sat atop their school and I could picture the abandoned mine and how scary it must have been. All of the descriptions brought an added element to the story and allowed the reader to be immersed in a world that is our own but with unique adventures.
.
.
If you want a lighthearted and fun mystery I encourage you to check this series out. Hoover is an Author that should not be underestimated and even though this story is geared towards middle grade children I promise that Adults will love it too.

Three Stars.
Revisado: 04-05-23
I listened to this book as an audiobook and I think that’s a huge reason why I gave it three stars. The narrator did an absolutely beautiful job at bringing this story to light. I loved what she did with our two main characters and I loved how her voice matched the characters' personalities to a tee. I was annoyed with the characters when I was supposed to be annoyed. I felt sorry for them when I was supposed to feel sorry for them. I loved them and wanted to give them a hug when I was supposed to love and want to give them a hug. The writing was just as beautiful as the narration and I thought that the two paired together was exquisite.
.
.
That being said, I wasn't a huge fan of the story itself. I didn’t relate to either of the main characters ; which was okay because they were middle aged and I am not. I also had an issue with the POV’s at certain parts of the book. We had our two main characters, Sam and Nisha, but there were random chapters with POV’s from Sam’s husband's perspective and a few others that didn’t make any sense. While those chapters were well written I didn’t think they were necessary and ended up causing more confusion than anything.
.
.
While both, the characters and the POV’S, didn’t interest me the plot was just as bad. I didn’t really understand the point of the story and I felt like there were some missed opportunities for the reader to connect with the characters through the lessons they learned. I didn’t really enjoy how long and drawn out some parts of the plot were either. These parts just felt like I was listening to a ton of repetition and it was hard to concentrate, especially because these were the parts where I was annoyed with the characters.
.
.
I would only recommend this book to those who are middle aged and think they would relate to the characters or to those who think the synopsis of the book is really intriguing. I normally don’t read the synopsis when starting a book, because I prefer to go in blind, but with this book I definitely think it’s necessary.
