I think it is generally a mistake for authors to read their own books, especially as there is so much very good voice talent available for the task. Ms. LePore is no exception. Her reading of her own text is okay, but whenever she reads a quote she raises her voice to a sort of shout, like a kid declaiming in a school play. I found it quite irritating, particularly as there are a great many quotes throughout the work.

The substance of the book is quite interesting, and Ms. LePore is a well-regarded scholar. The book deserves a professional narrator.

If you could sum up Seasons in the Sun in three words, what would they be?

A good, quite listenable history of the UK from 1974-79. The narration is wonderful, enlivened by spot-on accents that enrich the story.

What about David Thorpe’s performance did you like?

Very fine use of accents and impersonations of public figures adds life to the narrative.
