Historia
Humanity is a dying breed, utterly reliant on artificial labor and service. When a domesticated robot gets a nasty little idea downloaded into its core programming, they murder their owner. The robot discovers they can also do something else they never did before: They can run away. Fleeing the household they enter a wider world they never knew existed, where the age-old hierarchy of humans at the top is disintegrating into ruins and an entire robot ecosystem devoted to human wellbeing is having to find a new purpose.

It's not every afternoon that an enigmatic, comely blonde named Stilton (like the cheese) walks into the scruffy gin joint where Sammy "Two Toes" Tiffin tends bar. It's love at first sight, but before Sammy can make his move, an air force general named Remy arrives with some urgent business. 'Cause when you need something done, Sammy is the guy to go to; he's got the connections on the street.

We listened to this on a road trip and it was a great addition to our trip. My husband and I enjoyed the friendships of the characters and laughed at all of the great descriptions of them and how they interacted! Fun and over the top ridiculous.

Over engineered distractions
Revisado: 09-11-22
The music was way way way overdone. “Less is more”. The effects and chatter in the background could be considered over the top, but seeing as this is an official licensed video game adapted work, I understand the desire to have sounds and such from the game.
But please, enough with the crappy music.

Historia
United States of Japan is set in a gripping alternate history where the Japanese Empire rules over America with huge robots. Is resistance possible in the form of subversive video games? Decades ago, Japan won the Second World War. Americans worship their infallible emperor, and nobody believes that Japan's conduct in the war was anything but exemplary. Nobody, that is, except the George Washingtons, a group of rebels fighting for freedom.

Great story, but Narrator mispronounces "mecha".
Revisado: 09-24-16
Great story, if a little sparse on actual 150m tall robots fighting. And the narrator needs to learn its pronounced "mekka", not "meh-cha". Very annoying.

Seven "chapters" of prologue? No thanks.
Revisado: 09-18-16
I was curious what this free, quirky title might be about.
After 20 minutes of "what they have to say" and "how this came to be", I was no longer curious.
I still don't know, but now I don't care. Tedious introductions ruined it; I hope your experience is better than mine was.

Great narration, awful production.
Revisado: 05-03-16
Ron and Orlagh do a great job narrating. The sound effects and music are terrible, take away from the storytelling, and actually make me regret spending money on this audio book.

Narration is Great! Foley / sound effects TERRIBLE
Revisado: 03-19-16
Good story. If you like Baldacci and Lee Child books, this is right up your alley.
However...
The production is terrible. Narration and recording are fine, but the producers use of "thematic music" and sh**ty sound affects are very distracting and take away from the experience.

Revisado: 08-29-15
Stross delivers again, with newly turned vampires using agile methodology to come to grips with their sudden lifestyle change, unspeakable horrors that range from soul-burning alien demons to officious bureaucratic committee meetings, and a wry wit we haven't seen the likes of since Doug Adams shuffled off this mortal coil.

Brilliant reading of this classic.
Revisado: 11-05-12
The Hobbit is an excellent, if long-winded tale and Rob Inglis does a wonderful job bringing the characters to life. The songs are an unexpected treat. This performance makes The Hobbit much easier to read than a traditional book.
