Historia
Linguistics, the study of language, has a reputation for being complex and inaccessible. But here's a secret: There's a lot that's quirky and intriguing about how human language works-and much of it is downright fun to learn about. But with so many potential avenues of exploration, it can often seem daunting to try to understand it. Where does one even start?

This lecture series was excellent in all aspects. It was informative in depth of individual languages and in breadth of languages as a whole. it had great stories, and it was even humorous at times.

Historia
The Etymologicon is a completely unauthorized guide to the strange underpinnings of the English language. It explains: How you get from “gruntled” to “disgruntled”; why you are absolutely right to believe that your meager salary barely covers “money for salt”; how the biggest chain of coffee shops in the world (hint: Seattle) connects to whaling in Nantucket; and what precisely the Rolling Stones have to do with gardening.

The Earth teems with life: in its oceans, forests, skies, and cities. Yet there's a black hole at the heart of biology. We do not know why complex life is the way it is, or, for that matter, how life first began. In The Vital Question, award-winning author and biochemist Nick Lane radically reframes evolutionary history, putting forward a solution to conundrums that have puzzled generations of scientists.

makes me want to review biology
Revisado: 10-09-22
being well out of college and medical school, I haven't had much interest in reviewing cell biology and biochemistry, but this book has made me purchase more on that subject, as it relates it all to the origin of life and bigger questions.

Excellent!
Revisado: 04-29-22
Every chapter was excellent. I can't believe this was free with an Audible membership. I have listened to some and know why they were free. This lecture series was copyrighted 11 years ago, but it is history from prior to that time, and it did not seem outdated at all. Highly recommended!

Good Chemistry Foundation
Revisado: 03-30-22
I liked some chapters, mostly near the end. Most chapters were way to basic for me, but, then again, I was a biochemistry major 25 years ago. So, really, I should not have needed to listen to this at all. Haha. It would probably be really good for someone in high school or early college or for someone who doesn't know anything about chemistry.

As Dr. Kleier shares her knowledge with contagious excitement for her subject, she emphasizes the middle ground: Instead of focusing on cell microbiology or the study of ecosystems and habitats, she stresses the basic biology, function, and the amazing adaptations of the plants we see all around us.

Can't Stop with the Trivia
Revisado: 01-13-22
I didn't ever think I would be able to get so into botany, but this audio book made is super enjoyable. There are tons of things I have always wondered that are explained very well in this book. I have been telling people little trivia tidbits about foods, thorns, and other plants, and it is all very relevant to the world we live in daily. I'm not sure if this makes people see me as an annoying nerd or an interesting encyclopedia of knowledge, but I don't plan on staying quiet around plants any time soon.

Considering everything the brain does, how can it possibly be the source of our personalities, dreams, thoughts, sensations, utterances, and movements? Understanding the Brain, a 36-lecture course by award-winning Professor Jeanette Norden of Vanderbilt University, takes you inside this astonishingly complex organ and shows you how it works. With its combination of neurology, biology, and psychology, this course helps you understand how we perceive the world through our senses, how we move, how we learn and remember, and how emotions affect our thoughts and actions.

I took a neuroscience course as part of my PhD program, but it has been 24 years since then, and I am a physician now. It was a good refresher without all the molecular biology, and no pressure to memorize anything for tests. I wish this would have been made for Audible, though, without all of the references to diagrams, pictures, thr positions of her hands, etc.

How is it possible for the disciplines of cosmology, geology, anthropology, biology, and history to fit together? These 48 lectures answer that question by weaving a single story from accounts of the past developed by a variety of scholarly disciplines. The result is a story stretching from the origins of the universe to the present day and beyond, in which human history is seen as part of the history of our Earth and biosphere, and the Earth's history, in turn, is seen as part of the history of the universe.

A History Course Like None You've Ever Taken

Great except first 4 chapters
Revisado: 10-17-21
I love the concept of big history, and this was probably about as good of a lecture series on it as possible. The only criticism is that he overexplains some basic concepts like exponents, especially in the first four chapters. However, maybe people without any math or science background would benefit from this. It would probably be great for people who don't believe in science. Maybe they actually don't understand the basic concepts.
